This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: Message Board Pos t: I was blessed to be a part of a fact finding discussion concerning the Armstead Queen fam ily of Harrison County, VA/WV about a year ago. This discussion took place amongst members o f Hacker’s Creek Pioneer Descendants. Together we sorted out how manywives he had and which c hildren were born to that particular wife. I will briefly outline our findings so that peopl e may correct their records. I believe Carl E. Queen, from this message board was active in t hat discussion as well, and I would love for him to chime in to verify that the study took pl ace, over six or seven months as I recall. Much of the confusion comes from the fact peopl e have accepted the fact that the files of Don Norman are without error. In fact, there are n umerous errors in Don Normon’s files as he will readily verify. Don Norman has done a wonderf ul work in compiling family histories concerning our Hacker’s Creek ancestors. Unfortumately , he must rely upon others to give him information. He had the names, dates and pedigree of m y great-grandparents entirely wrong, but took the info from another person, who took it fro m another person, who took it .... you get my point. We also discovered there were errors i n “The Queen History & Family Tree” by Stephen Post Queen. I believe some of these errors occ urred because part of the family history was considered gospel because it came from the recol lections of an elderly family member. Please understand that I appreciate the work of Stephe n Post Queen and have found his manuscript to be a treasure of information and insight. Howev er, there are county records that refute some of his information. Our discussion determine d that Armstead Queen was married 3 times. I will post his information then proceed with th e argument regarding why the children are assigned as they are. Armstead Queen (Charles, Ch arles McQueen) was born 1777, and died Bef. 1830 in Johnstown, Harrison, VA. He married (1) L ydia Abt. 1795. She died Abt. 1810. He married (2) Minnie Jett Abt. 1810, daughter of James J ett and Leanah. She was born Abt. 1777 in Rooting Creek, Culpeper, VA, and died 1811 in Harri son Co, VA. He married (3) Charlotte Norman 04 April 1812 in Harrison Co, VA, daughter of Cle ment Norman and Jemima Shumate. She was born 1784. Children of Armstead Queen and Lydia are: 1. Elizabeth Norman4 Queen, born 27 December 1795 in Ruraldale, Harrison, VA; died 18 Apri l 1864 in Ruraldale, Harrison, WV. 2.Charles Armstead Queen, born 1800 in Harrison Co, VA; di ed 18 July 1870 in Peck's Run, Upshur, WV. 3. John B. Queen, born Abt. 1801 in Ruraldale, Har rison, VA; died 01 September 1871 in Ruraldale, Harrison, WV. 4. Levi Harrison Queen, born 0 7 February 1807 in Ruraldale, Harrison, VA; died 01 February 1875 in Lorentz, Upshur, WV. 5 . Mary Queen, born 1808. She married William Bean. 6. Nancy Queen, born Abt. 1809 in Peel Tre e Creek, Harrison, VA. 7. Sarah Queen, born 1810. She married Jesse Garrett. Child of Armste ad Queen and Minnie Jett is: 8. Lydia Ann Jett4 Queen, born 22 November 1811 in Rooting Creek , Harrison, VA; died 07 February 1871 in Lewis Co, WV. Children of Armstead Queen and Charlo tte Norman are: 9. James N.4 Queen, born 1813 in Rooting Creek, Harrison, VA; died 30 June 19 00 in Harrison Co, WV. 10. Martin Monrow Queen, born 1817 in Rooting Creek, Harrison, VA. 11 . Letty Queen, born 1818; died 1897. 12. Jemima Maximelia Queen, born 1820 in Gnatty Creek, H arrison, VA; died 20 September 1880. 13. Eliza Haley Queen, born 1822. The following record s support the fact Minnie Jett did not bear the children after 1812 to Armstead Queen: 1) Ha rrison County marriage records indicate Armstead Queen married Charlotte Norman (daughter o f Clement Norman and Jemima Shumate) on 04 April 1812. 2) The following land transaction fro m 19 March 1821 clearly shows Armstead’s wife is NOT Minnie Jett but Charlotte Norman: Harri son Co., VA Indenture, Norman to Hutson, 1821 Isaac Norman and others To )( Deed John Hut son )( This Indenture made this 19th day of March AD 1821 between Isaac Norman, Martin Norm an, Armstead Queen & Charlotte Queen his wife, Ephraim Jeffries & Tabetha his wife, William N orman, BaileyNorman of the first part and John Hutson of the other part witneseth? that the s aid parties of the first part ????? inconsideration of one dollar to them in hand paid by th e said John Hutson have granted bargained and sold and hereby do grant bargain and sell to th e said John Huston a certain tract or parcel of land situated in the County of Harrison and C ommonwealth of Virginia adjoining lands of the heirs of Clement Norman Deceased, Holdridge Ch idester and others situate on the waters? of Rooting Creek and bounded as followeth as Beginn ing at a chesnut oak and running North 87 degrees E 135 ½ poles to a gum then from the said C hesnut Beginning S 57 ½ degrees East 85 poles to a sugar tree thence North 48 3/4 degrees Eas t 84 poles to the aforsaid gum to being that same tract of land once conveyed to said Hutso n by Holdridge Chedester and included in a conveyance from said Huston to Clement Norman dece ased. In Witnes whereof the said parties of the first part have hereunto set thei r hands and seals the day & year herein before first mentioned. It appears tha t Minnie Jett died in 1811, most likely in childbirth or very soon thereafter. Armstead the n married Charlotte Norman. Armstead dies around 1829 as Charlotte remarries Daniel Jett o n 9 September 1830 according to Harrison County Marriage Records (Bk 3 pg 58) An estate dee d regarding property formerly belonging to Armstead and Charlotte reflects her new name: Har rison County Deeds - Bk29:1 25A. on Rooting Creek in 1839 conveyed to James Little by John B . Queen and Isabella his wife, Charlotte Jett, former wife of Armstead Queen, James N. Quee n and Sarah his wife, Joeph Jenkins and Elizabeth his wife, Charles A. Queen and Charlotte hi s wife, Levi H. Queen and Sarah his wife, William Been and Nancy his wife, Willaim Oldacre an d Lydia his wife, Martin M. Queen and Margaret his wife, Jesse Garrett and Sarah his wife, Jo hn Dennison Jr. and Lettice his wife and Jemima queen heirs of Armstead Queen dec., all of Ha rrison. This was a very hard discussion for me to endure as I had always been “told” and bel ieved that my ancestor was James Jett Queen, son of Minnie Jett. I had accumulated a mountai n of information regarding the Jett family, and frankly, found it an assault on my family his tory that there could be anything to the fact Charlotte was his mother. In the end truth shou ld be our driving force, not personal pride. I have changed my files to reflect the truth an d I am a very PROUD descendant of not only Charlotte Norman, but her sister Sarah Norman as w ell. Just a side note to ponder - Look at the children of Charlotte Norman. Two girls are na med after Charlotte's family members, Lettice and Jemima. I am open to comments. Sorry for t he ramble, but there is quite a bit of false information in our Queen Rootsweb trees. And, i t is something that needs to be corrected poste haste!
