George Harkless' Story

Racing at Waterford Hills, 8/21/99

My ITA Car

My ITA car started life as a 1974 MK1 2.8L 4 speed US spec. street car. In 1989, I started converting it into an ITA race car. The current Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) ITA rules allow us to balance and blueprint the engine, but they allow no other modifications. We can't do anything with the transmission, however, rear axle ratios are open. Certain alternate carburetors are allowed. Exhaust can be anything that you want, however in SCCA racing many tracks have a sound limit. Suspension is fairly open, except that you must run the same style as came on a stock vehicle, (I.E., if it HAD leaf springs, you must run some type of leaf spring, and utilize the production mounting points,).

Race Report

Saturday Warm-up I did not participate, since nothing had been changed other than to adjust the rear brakes, and bleed the brake system.

Saturday Qualifying Qualified 14th, with a lap in the high 1:22:00s, (The leaders are running about 4 seconds a lap quicker than myself).

Saturday's Race: I got a decent start. I was worried about turn one, as some idiocy has been known to happen there. Still, I passed a Honda CRX on the start. Somewhere about halfway through the race, the CRX started pushing me. As I was going into turn three, I missed the line, (actually, there is no "right line" at turn three, however, there are about a thousand ways to hit it wrong). To make a long story short, I went four wheels off at the short chute to turn four. The CRX thought I was going to come back across the track into him. So he went driver's right to avoid me. Unfortunately, he clipped the curb, which sent him into me as I was safely bringing the Capri back onto the track. there was "slight contact". I heard a quick "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZTTTTTT" sound as we touched. He was not able to pass me at that time, even though I was off of the gas, and trying to gather back the car. However, with in another lap I realized that he was defiantly quicker than myself. Not to mention that my tires had heated up and gone away. So I let him by me. Still. I managed to improve my finishing by one.

Sunday Warm-up: Again, I decided to forego it.

Sunday's Race: As the green flag flew, some idiot tried to make up spots by going drivers left onto the OLD pit lane. Needless to say, there was an "incident" going into turn one. Fortunately it was the idiot who ended up spinning out, unfortunately back across the track. I somehow managed to avoid the carnage.

I started to press the CRX in front of me. (the same one from Sat.) I stayed with him for several laps until my tires started fading again. As I slowly lost contact with him, a Mazda RX7 was slowly gaining on me. He finally caught me, then pressed me for several laps more. He did finally get by me, but not before we ran side by side through turns 6A, 7, 8, down the front straight, and through turn one and into two.

By now, the tires were really over heated. With two laps to go, I could see the leaders rapidly gaining on me. Now, I really HATE getting lapped, so I drove the car just as hard as it would go to keep in front of the leaders. Now, realize that the leaders are just this close to lapping me, and that they are actually on their last lap. Also realize that a group of Capri guys were watching and cheering me on. So for the last three corners I ran a slightly unorthodox line through the corners. I did not block, but it wasn't anything close to a traditional "Waterford Hills" line. As I came down towards the starters stand, I could see the "checkered" flag starting to wave. However, I beat the other car across the stripe by about half a fender, thereby staying on the lead lap. I was even able to improve my starting position by one spot again.

Epilogue: While doing routine post race maintenance, I found that the right front tire had an area of cord showing through as large as a dollar bill.
