The Blue Tail Hawk is my on-going ultralight study project. I wanted an ultralight that meets the following
goals: low initial cost, scratch built,
fuel efficient, enough speed and range for cross country flying, low drag, low weight, FAA
Part 103 compliant, comfortable, good visibiity
down to the ground, easy to fly, use a small
four stroke engine.
Some good flying was done with a 26hp Rotax 277 and 3-blade Power Fin prop. With the long wings it
did quite well that way.
Due to the success of the Generac v-twin engine on my Thunder Gull, I re-worked the Blue Tail Hawk to accomodate the
Generac engine. I needed to get weight out of the tail to keep the center of gravity near the center of the range. The new
tail plane is composite, and in a T-tail configuration which is lighter. And with more thrust from the Generac,
I am able to operate the Blue Tail Hawk with shorter wings.
