Later European Ford engine codes
A different system of engine codes was used on Fords built in Germany after January 1969, and all European Fords after August 1970. This system used 2 characters to identify the engine. The first character corresponds to the engine's nominal displacement as follows:

RS/GT version |
Note that in some cases this coding system can be ambiguous; for example codes NV, NX, and NY could be either a 2000cc "Essex" V4, or a 2000cc "Taunus/Cologne" V6. In this case the number of cylinders identifies the engine. Codes MV, MX, and MY are potentially more confusing: They could apply to the 1700cc "Essex" V4 as well as the 1700cc "Taunus/Cologne" V4. Luckily the 1700cc "Essex" engine was never used in Capris!
