Meet the Body One Tri Team

Anna Markus

I grew up in Zionsville, Indiana and was the youngest of six kids!  Most of my childhood was spent as a competitive swimmer and I was fortunate to swim for Indiana University during my college years.  After school, I took a long break from swimming and exercise, in general.  I married Chris and soon became pregnant with my son, Reid.  Work and motherhood became my priority for several years; however, the desire to get back into fitness was important.  When my husband, Chris, opened Body One Health and Fitness Center in 2000, I made it a point to focus on getting back into shape.

The sport of triathlon (swim, bike, run) started out as a relay several years ago.  I was the swim leg in a sprint distance event at Eagle Creek.  Despite lacking a lot of swim strength and speed, I had a lot of fun doing the race and felt this could be a sport I could enjoy.  Thus, my journey into triathlon has been going strong for the past five years.  Triathlons come in many distances from sprint to Ironman.  Like many triathletes my journey started with sprint races. Feeling the success from this distance, I soon set my goals on achieving ½ Ironman distances (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run).  My first ½ Iron experience was a bit of a struggle but nonetheless exhilarating. With Leanne and Eric as my motivational training partners and friends, I set to accomplish the goal a second time.  After successfully finishing the Muncie Endurathon in 2008 with a first place in my age group and a fourth overall result I knew the sky was the limit.

After the body recovered from Muncie, Leanne, Eric and I dabbled in the idea of doing a full Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run).  Well, persuasion is best met with encouragement from others and we soon decided this would be our goal for 2009.

I am very excited about taking the journey to Ironman.  Leanne, Eric and I will be competing in the Louisville Ironman on August 30, 2009.  I am thrilled that Body One Physical Therapy will be supporting and cheering for us.  Their commitment to sport performance and injury prevention is impeccable.  I value the experience and dedication of their staff.  It is this encouragement that will assist us in meeting our goal and realizing our dream!

When not competing in triathlon, I enjoy spending time with my two wonderful kids, Reid and Ella, and my husband, Chris.  Did I mention we have two maniacal hound dogs? I am also busy pursuing my nursing degree at Ivy Tech.

I grew up in Central Indiana in a small town called Boggstown.  I have always enjoyed competitive sports in high school whether it was tennis, basketball, or volleyball.  After college I did little as far as athletics.  I met my husband, Randy, and we married in 1991 and moved to Chicago for 3 years.  I started working in Real Estate in Chicago.  Living in Lincoln Park was fun, but then decided to move back home and start a family.  We lived in Broad Ripple for a couple of years, and then built our first home in Westfield.  I continued my Real Estate career working for a new home builder. Two kids later and a little chubbier, I decided I wanted to go to the gym and get in shape.  I eventually got up the courage to go to a spinning class.  That is where I met Anna Markus, my friend and fellow training partner.  She was the instructor for the spinning classes and really made it a tough work out with good music (a little more classic rock/hard rock than most women would play).  I liked the classes and continued to push into new areas of training doing brick workouts (incorporating a run after our spin class), training for the mini, etc.  Of course, another baby came during this time frame (I ran the mini pregnant with her at 3 or 4 months).  I have to say that the weight that I gained during my third pregnancy came off a lot quicker then my prior two children because I was working out regularly.   Eventually I think Anna mentioned she was going to do the Cicero Triathlon and I decided "why not try one.”   I did it and really liked the challenge.  I placed in the top 3 in my age group a couple of times and decided that I wanted to try longer races.  Anna and I decided to train for the Muncie Endurathon (1/2 Ironman distance).  I was totally new to this stuff, but once you get into it, you cannot get it out of your mind. By 2007 Anna and I added a new training partner Eric Anderson to our bike rides.  We had met in cycling class.  It is really nice to have training partners.  It is hard to do the workouts some days, and to share the time with someone else really helps keep you accountable and motivated.  The three of us rode most Saturday mornings last summer leading up to the 2008 Muncie Endurathon. This goal was realized.

On several occasions Anna, Eric and I would talk about the challenge of a full Ironman.  I read about triathletes doing Ironman races in Triathlete Magazine.  I’ve watched the Hawaii Ironman, and always thought "no way.”  However, after doing Muncie twice, I thought that it really just comes down to committing to a training program and to condition my mind and body that this is possible.  Sooooo the new BIG Challenge for 2009 is a full Ironman!  All three of us (Anna, Eric and I) are committed to do the Louisville Ironman on August 30th, 2009.  So the training is on.

It is a little daunting to look at the amount of time required to properly train for an event like this.  I think it might have been an article I read about Ryan Hall in Runner’s World magazine about only concentrating on the mile he was in while he was running a marathon.  So, I am trying not to overwhelm myself about the volume of training ahead of me and NOT completely FREAKING OUT over what I have gotten myself into.  I think I did mention that I am married and have 3 girls (Sarah, age 11, Lauren, age 9 and Abby, age 4) and I am a realtor with ERA Real Estate Links in Carmel!  I love it all and it is a bit hectic at times.  What it really comes down to is a family that supports me in my freakish endeavors.  I realize it is a little stressful when I leave early on Saturday morning before they are all up and don't return until 10:30 or 11:00 (that was last summer training for a half Ironman).  This summer I will not be returning home until 1:00 after a long ride. A patient and loving family will go along way over the next several months, and I feel fortunate to have this.

Eric Anderson

2009 will be my second year competing in triathlons.  Growing up, I was always involved in sports (baseball, basketball, and soccer).  I stayed pretty active throughout college and remained in pretty good shape.   I got married soon after college and never kept consistent workouts in my schedule.   I had concerns with my future health because heart disease runs in my family.  When I turned 30 I decided that I needed to take control of my physical well being.  In 2001 I signed up for my first half marathon.   I realized that I loved running, and over the next several years I kept up with a consistent running workout program.

In 2007, I met Anna and Leanne and heard about their half Ironman experience.  I knew I wanted to do more than just “pound the pavement”.  I ended up joining the Westfield Master’s swim group and purchased a road bike.  I was on my way to my first triathlon.  Last year I was able to complete a sprint, Olympic and Half Iron distance races.

I’ve got a lot of improvements to make in each segment of triathlon.  I’ve enjoyed the friendships made and have appreciated the way the tri community pushes and encourages one another.   The training that I’ve been able to do with Anna and Leanne has been blast and the way we push each other and keep each other accountable to stay consistent in our training has been a big help to me.

I am looking forward to seeing what we will individually accomplish in 2009.  I am especially looking forward to the completion of my first Ironman in Louisville on August 30th.

Less than two weeks away until IMKY! We are finally in the taper phase of our training which means we train less and rest more.  Leanne and I competed in the Cicero tri on August 8.  It was a great day for me as I took the overall women's title.  I was very encouraged by my run split as I have been working harder on this leg of my tri training (check out www.onlineraceresults.com to see results- look under Cicero triathlon).  Leanne had an asthma attack due to a reaction she had from the algae in Morse Lake.  Needless to say, she was disappointed with her race.  Of course, we have all had days and races which did not meet our expectations.  But, this is part of life and you learn from each experience and then move on.  In the end, we all hope everything falls into place on August 30 and that we go into Louisville with a rested body and mind, and NO equipment failure!

Please check out www.ironman.com and go to "track an athlete" for the Louisville Ironman.  You can see how Leanne, Eric, and I our doing at certain points of the race via the website listed above.  The days draw closer, and the nerves grow bigger.  Stay positive, stay strong, and pray :).

Another week and we're getting so close.  We can feel the end is near as our thoughts become more consumed with this crazy endeavor we will be embarking on.  Leanne and I competed in the Shelbyville Triathlon this past weekend.  Unfortunately, a high content of e-coli was in the lake and the swim portion of the race was cancelled (yummy).   Sooooo...the race became a duathlon and was composed of a 2 mile run/ 14 mile bike/ 3 mile run.  Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled as running is my weakest leg.  But, I wasn't going to go into the race with a negative attitude.  I got out there and kicked some butt.  I went away winning the overall women's race and gained a lot of confidence going into the final weeks of training.  Leanne showed off impressively with a 1st place finish in her age group.  I was so proud of her effort as she stayed consistent and strong throughout the entire race.  We plan to race the Cicero tri this weekend and pray they don't cancel the swim!  Eric is still going strong with the training and is staying focused on the plan!  Go, Eric, Go !!!

07/28/09

Yippee!!  We just got through one of our hardest weeks of training.  Talk about brutal.  On Saturday, I was ready to tackle a monster run but was hindered by the weather.  Of course, I started out running outside about 6:15 am.  About 1.5 miles out, a bolt of lightening came dangerously close and I quickly made a turn-a-round and sprinted back home.  Okay...I knew 3 miles was not going to cut it.  So, I took myself to the clinic and ran a grueling 1hr/30 min on the treadmill (12.3 miles).  Well...I still needed to get more time in on the run, but I needed to teach my cycle class at the gym.  I taught a tough 60 minute cycle class (hills galore), but knew I needed to run more.  Well, I got my butt back on a treadmill after the class and ran another 30 minutes (3.7 miles).  After it was said and done, I got in my time and mileage for running (19 miles) and squeezed in a 60 minute bike class to top it off.   You'd think I 'd deserve a day off, but NO!  Sunday delivered a 5 hour bike ride (glorious wind throughout) and 3 mile run.  Leanne and I were wiped out, to say the least.  I am relieved that this week calls for a litle recovery and that taper time is fast approaching.  I plan to race the Shelbyville Tri this Sunday.  It's a sprint distance (600 meter swim, 14 mile bike, and 3 mile run) with a nice and flat course.

07/21/09

So....I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate around this little site and things aren't going well.  The rest of my journal entries are below the pictures.  Anyway, training this week was lonely.  Leanne was on vacation (she ran a lot of hills while enjoying southern Indiana), Eric's son was heavily involved in baseball playing, and Batt had a manly men's retreat at his church (do I hear a hallelujah?) which kept him away over the weekend.  Well, like all disciplined athletes, I did what I had to do and trained alone.  Okay...motivation was tough.  I could only stand to ride about 3 hr/15 min with a 4 mile run after on Sunday.  The training plan asked for a 4 hour ride and a 50 minute run. Minor details.  I followed the plan to a tee on Saturday and worked through a 15.5 mile run with a 60 min bike after. Not too shabby.  I celebrated Saturday with Harry Potter (my absolute favorite book series) and was slightly disappointed.  Being a superfan, I expect the movie to follow the book and saw a few gaps. Overall, the scenes with Snape (my favorite) saved the movie and I can't wait for book seven to be on the big screen :).  Training gets more brutal this week and continues for another 3 weeks.  Then.....it's taper time (can I get another hallelujah).

The Muncie Endurathon came and went with a mixed bag of emotions and a little trepidation for what lies ahead next month.  While none of us "officially" tapered for the race, we cut back slightly on our training and even took a rest day on Friday (the day before the race). Race day emerged cloudy and moderately windy.  The water temperature was 77 degrees (wetsuit legal) and choppy.  For me, my swim was disappointing as I felt I couldn't control my stroke or direction in the water.  I felt the waves throwing me around like a ragdoll and beating me up from start to finish.  I finsihed the swim in 32 minutes (5 minutes slower then last year- no wetsuit).  I've come to the conclusion that while wetsuits help a lot of people, they haven't helped me at all.  The few times I've worn them, I swam slower- go figure. Anyway, the bike leg was next!  I could feel the wind but I felt in control and strong with my ride.  I finished going 2 minutes faster then last year and averaging about 22.3 MPH.  By the time I got off the bike, the rain was falling- hard.  At certain points it was stinging my face and blinding my vision.  But, you move on- hoping for the best.  The run, for me, was painful.  My shoes and socks were heavy with rain and my mental state of being was negative.  I just wanted the race to be over.  I finished sore and tired, but thankful to be done.  I placed 4th in the Open Division (securing a $100 cash award- yippee) and 6th overall with a final time of 4:55 (about 20 seconds faster then last year).  What I've learned from this race is my need to work on the run.  Looking at the top twenty females overall, my run time was the second slowest (1:48).  I know I have the potential to be faster.  It is overcoming the mental and physical wear long-distance races puts on me.
In any event, what made the race most enjoyabe was the comraderie of my training partners- Eric, Leanne, and Batt!  I don't think I would be doing 1/2 and full Ironmans if it wasn't for the support of good friends with like-minded goals!  I was proud of the efforts they all put out in Muncie.  I was so proud of Leanne for perservering through a tough swim.  I was impressed with how Eric hit it hard in the run finishing with a great time that totally surpassed his run from last year.  Finally, Batt always makes it look easy by plowing through each leg of the race with strength and consistency.  This guy does not quit!  To get a full report of results, check out www.onlineraceresults.com

07/03/09
I wanted to give a re-cap of the race this past weekend from the Morse Triathlon in Noblesville.  Overall, Leanne and I were very pleased with our performance and feel that our training is right on schedule.  Despite a respiratory infection and nagging asthma issues, I was able to squeeze out second place overall (check out www.tuxbro.com for results).  This was very encouraging for me as I have been unable to perform well in my workouts due to my illness.  Currently, I am taking antibiotics and have changed asthma medications to help manage my breathing issues.  I am pleased to say that I am feeling so much better and I'm almost back 100%.  Leanne did a terrific job in the tri with a 5th place finish in her age group.  All three legs of her race were strong and I was particularly proud of her swim.  Way to go, Leanne!!  Check out our photo on this page.  Leanne and I are posing with my sister, Sarah, who participated.  She did a fantastic with a 3rd place showing in her age group.  Next up is the Muncie Endurathon.  Look for Eric to participate with Leanne and I.  We are very excited about the race and hope to improve from our times last year.

6/25/09
We've been pushing each day of training and, needless to say, we've had some highs and lows with motivation and staying healthy.  I have been trying to get over a nasty respiratory infection that's been making it difficult to breathe efficiently.  I have been very frustrated with how my running has been because of my illness.  I have heard it is not uncommon for triathletes to go through a "dark phase" of training when motivation and excitement begin to waiver.  I have to tell myself that this will pass and focus my energy on maintaining a positive attitude.  Being the competitive person I am, it is hard to ignore how the body responds to exercise.  It worries me when I can't run with the same effort and pace that I normally do. Again, it comes back to staying focused. That is, it's knowing that when a body is trying to heal from illness it will not be putting out stellar run times.
Anyway, Leanne and I will be competing in our first tri of the season this Saturday in Noblesville (Morse Tri).  It is a sprint race (600 meter swim, 13 mile bike, 3 mile run) so I feel pretty good about completing the distance.  The main question is speed and whether I can put forth a strong effort.

06/12/09
Hello!  I'm a little delayed writing this week due to a family trip to Holdiay World.  The kids had a great time and did not want to return home.  While I enjoyed the fast water slides, the spinning rides made me feel sick and nauseaous.  It was great to be home and resume training.

The break was nice as I felt pretty good this week logging in some good bike and run miles.  Both Leanne and Eric have been diligent with their training.  A big weekend is planned as Eric plans to get in about 100 miles on the saddle with a six mile run added at the end.  Leanne and I plan to go more on time and put in about a 4 hour ride with a 40 minute run after.  This is just one day out of the weekend.  All of us plan to get in a long run and shorter bike on the other day (about 2 hours of running then following it with a 60 minute bike).  Basically, the goal is to focus on a long bike and a long run every weekend to get our bodies conditioned to the demands of long-course triathlon.

Our first tri of the season is coming in about 2 weeks (Morse Tri in Noblesville).  This race will test our speed and guage how our bodies are responding to all the training.  It is a sprint tri (600 meter swim, 16 mile bike, 3 mile run) so I feel confident we can accompish this race with little insult to the body.

06/01/09
What a weekend.  On Saturday, a group of us (Leanne, Eric, Batt, Ryan and myself) drove to Louisville to ride part of the IM Louisville bike course.  This was a great opportunity to get a "feel" for the rolling hills.  Personally, my legs were fried after 80 miles!  While I'm thrilled we got to do this, it made me realize how much work I still have.  I believe I can successfully complete the entire 112 miles; however, the worry lies in how intense the hills will be on my legs and if they will have enough stamina for the marathon.  Of course, part of getting through an IM in one piece is mental, and maintaining focus and motivation is a huge percentage of success.  Oftentimes, the mind can stir up a variety of negative emotions during hours of physical stress. Luckily, I am so grateful to have training friends to keep me energized and believing in myself.
On Sunday, we did our own thing- as far as exercise.  I was happy to not feel any soreness in my muscles; however, they felt tired.  I was able to manage about a 10 mile run feeling pretty good.
Another week of vigorous training is on the schedule.  For Eric, Leanne and myself, our kids get out of school on Tuesday.  This is where the fun really starts :)

5/26/09
What a busy weekend of training.  Saturday found me on the Monon trail.  I squeaked out close to 14 miles and followed it with a 60 min. cycle class- which I taught.  Eric got in about 80 miles on the bike and followed that with a run.  Leanne got in a long run logging in close to 2 hours.  On Sunday, Leanne and I rode with our friend Batt (also competing in IM Louisville).  He has done IM Wisconsin and has been a wealth of knowledge to the team as far as advice on training and nutrition. We got in about 70 miles.  The highlight of the ride was being done and enjoying some of Leanne's egg casserole.  I brought the dougnuts. On Monday, we rode 40 miles and followed it with a 4 mile run.  Overall, the holiday weekend brought good weather and decent training.

05/18/09
Another week of training done!  Leanne, Eric and I are staying pretty healthy and maintaining our focus.  We plan to ride the IM Louisville bike course on May 30 with other riders participating in the race.  We are eager to "test drive" the course and get an idea regarding what to expect (lots of hills).  As for me, I am wondering if I'll be able to put in 112 miles of biking this early in the season.  The group got in a 60 miler yesterday (a far cry from 112).  We'll see how it goes :).
The weather is supposed to be nice this week. I'm looking forward to moving my swims outside in a 50 meter pool, but will have to wait until Memorial Day when the outdoor pools open. Brrrrr....

05/11/09
The team endured a pretty tough weekend of training!  I logged in about 13 miles of running and then taught my cycle class for an hour on Saturday.  On Sunday, we rode for about 3 hours and then I put in a 5 miler later in the day. The perk with all this training is the eating you get to do!  Of course, proper nutrition is important and I try to adhere to healthy eating when I can (my husband is laughing at this).  Of course, when you're craving a double cheeseburger and large crinkle cut fry from Culvers after a long workout the temptation cannot be denied (yum...it was tasty).  Mother's Day was nice.  I pleaded with the kids the only gift I needed was for them to get along and NOT FIGHT.  This worked for about 5 minutes.  They are such angels.  Less than 15 weeks until the Ironman!  That may seem like a long time, but since we've registered for the race last September, it is just around the corner.

05/03/09
Welcome!  I wanted to give everyone an update on our Mini Marathon experience this past Saturday.  Most of you may know this race is 13.1 miles!  I think, overall, we have a lot to be proud of. Eric did an incredible job with a personal best time of 1:26.  He seems right on schedule with his goals (at least for running- ha ha).  Leanne put in a great effort with a 2:04.  While she was a little disappointed with the time, she felt good after the race and felt that she could have "gone forever" at the pace she set for herself.  This will be key for Ironman, because it's not so much about speed as it is steady endurance.  As for me, I was quite happy with my performance.  I finished with a time of 1:35 (only a minute off my best).  I felt strong, but have been struggling with some knee pain.  The team will continue training while adding more volume to our swims, rides and runs.  Have a great week :)  Anna

04/27/09
Hello all!  I wanted to let everyone know that training is in full gear.  Leanne and I rode 50 miles yesterday.  The wind was brutal and I thought we would never make it back.  Leanne, Eric and I will be running in the Mini Marathon this Saturday.  This will be a good test to see where we are as far as our run conditioning.  Please check in periodically to get the latest on our training journey.  Stay tuned for some updated pictures, as well :)
Hey, life isn't all about Ironman training! My greatest achievement-  my kids, Reid and Ella!!  Talk later, Anna
