Notes: Martha, according to "Border settlers of Northwestern Virginia" pg 139 "The daughter of Hughe s who was captured at the time of the West tragedy, was his eldest child, Martha. She was re turning home from the house of John Hacker, where she
had gone to get a pup. Hacker lived about four miles up the creek from where Hughes lived . Withers says she was 'rfansomed by her father the next year,', but as a substance of fac t she did not return home until 1790 and was a prisoner two
years and nine months. Her father secured her release at Sundusky Plains after the treaty o f Fort Harmer, January 9, 1789, which made it possible to secure the release of Indian captiv es." pg 221, "Martha, born in December, 1773, capture
