Notes: Carrie Cathern Carte in her book "Forebears and Descendants of William "Billy" Taylor and Mah ala Cromwell" shows Samuel Taylor as a descendant of the Zachary Taylor family, one descendan t of which is President Zachary Taylor. Correspondence in my possession between her and my a unt Elizabeth deGruyter Turner (who did substantial work on the Taylor/Hill descendants for t he book) shows that she was not certain of the connection at the time of publication. Furthe r correspondence after publication shows that she had further research done by Starr Genealog ical of Utah, which she accepted, and which shows that this Samuel Taylor did not descend fro m the Zachary Taylor family.
This research further shows that Mary "Polly" Price, who was reportedly half Cherokee, was no t the mother of Samuel Taylor's first family, including Billy Taylor, as shown in "Forebear s and Descendants." The fact that Samuel Taylor, father of Billy, had two wives named Nancy , as well as living with Polly Price, and the number of Williams and Samuel in several genera tions of the family, makes sorting them out very confusing. Samuel Taylor, Sr., was also mar ried to a Mary Price, who was born in 1760, according to his Revolutionary War pension applic ation. Carte and Starr concluded that she was married to both father and son. However, I be lieve that Mary Price who was married to Samuel Taylor Sr. was the daughter of Daniel Price , and that Mary Price, married to Samuel Taylor, Jr., was the daughter of Daniel's son Richar d and his wife Lucy, a Cherokee Indian, and so the first Mary's niece.
