Summer Evenings

On any given Tuesday evening, you might find people playing fiddle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, banjo, whistle or a variety of other instruments, in addition to mountain dulcimers and hammered dulcimers. All acoustic instruments are welcome and we encourage the passing public to join in singing or trying an instrument.

It's a fun and casual jam. Bring your dulcimer, or other instrument, and come join us.

The Dulcimer Gathering is a loosely organized group of mountain and hammered dulcimer players.  We gather together to learn new songs and to entertain ourselves and others.

What WE Do

During June, July and August we meet in a publc place to entertain ourselves and those who pass by.  The usual procedure on Tuesday evenings is to go around the music circle and have each player name a tune for the group to play. We have had as many as thirty players at a time but it is more common to have fifteen or twenty. Some people bring their lawn chairs and just listen. Other people find us there when they are out for a stroll and stop to listen. We usually have a few extra dulcimers for people to try out and someone is always willing to work with people who are looking for some help in learning to play the dulcimer.

During the months from September through May the group breaks into two groups: one for hammered dulcimer players and one for mountain dulcimer players.  The HD players meet on the first Thursday evening and the MD players meet on the third Thursday evening of each month.  Both groups meet at 7:00 p.m. at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation building on North Street in Lafayette.

Becoming Part of the Group

Anyone with an interest in playing, or learning to play, the dulcimer with others is welcome.

CD Available

The Dulcimer Gathering produced an album of twenty songs commonly played at our sessions on the Plaza. If you are interested in this album, "Jammin' on the Plaza," contact us at the address listed below.

CHANGE OF SUMMER VENUE

Instead of jammin’ on the Plaza, we are moving to Centennial Park, Lafayette, located one block north of TAF where we usually meet in the winter.  The park is on the corner of 6th and Brown Streets. A parking lot is on the north side.  We will meet each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. starting June 7 through August 30.  We have the added benefit of using a room in the Trinity UM Church Education Building (next block south) in case of rain.
