DAVID PATTERSON

IN THE CIVIL WAR

According to his enlistment papers, on April 12, 1862, David enlisted as a veteran volunteer with the 10th Regiment, Company "E" of West Virginia Infantry Volunteers at Beverly West Virginia. David received a commission on December 15, 1864 as a 1st Lieutenant. He remained at that rank until he resigned on June 3, 1865.

In his letter of resignation, which was written in a camp near Richmond, Virginia on May 8, 1865, David states "I have the honor herewith to tender my resignation as 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Regiment of West Virginia Inft. Vols. on account of my wife being in a very delicate state of health for a long time, and I have a small helpless family, who is in great need of my presence. I have served faithfully three years and five months, and if the war had not yet been over, the strongest inducement could not make me resign."
