Couples is a weekly group meeting of couples
of which one or both members have been affected by an addiction. Often when one
party has entered a recovery program the other half of the relationship feels left out. In
many cases hurt and anger have been hidden, misdirected or misinterpreted for long periods.
Trust, communication and considerateness are often issues. It has been
shown to many of us that Drug and alcohol addiction is a family disease, even if only one is addicted.
The purpose of couples is not to discuss addiction,
but to discuss problems which affect the lives of both the addicted and the non-addicted to restore a relationship in a drug
and alcohol free lifestyle. By the new couple listening to the "Old Timers" it
is often found that the problems they have are not unique to their relationship. By
the "Old Timers" listening to the newcomers, it reminds us that we may still have the same problems, and that humility is
a spiritual principal that is essential.
The Couples Group meets every Saturday evening
at 7.30 pm at the Recovery Center at Valley General Hospital. There is also a
special couples meeting every New Year's Eve, with a celebration following.
