History of the Quilters
Quilting has been in existence since the 12 century when it was used by knights as an “Aketon” or “Gambeson” under their armor. One of the earliest decorative works, the “Tristan Quilt” was made around 1360.
Quilting became common in the United States in the late 18th century and early years of the 19th. Most women were busy spinning, weaving, and sewing to clothe their family. Wealthy women had more time and would make whole bed quilts that showed the fine needlework of the maker.
The Kathryn Heidenreich quilters were one of the first groups organized after the center opened its doors to the public. They have remained a constant fixture on our activity calendar and are still going strong. Each year the ladies hand stitch one quilt to be donated to the center as a raffle prize. Funds are used to help the center stay open and active, “Full of Life”, adults in the Kingman community. This year the ladies selected an intricate quilt pattern called The Triple Irish Chain. It is a queen sized quilt made in purple, white, and green. The raffle will continue until December 16th. The winner will have a wonderful Christmas gift. If you love sewing and/or would like to learn to quilt, please stop by and see our quilting group each Thursday morning from 9am until 11am. Newcomers are always welcome.
