Dave and Jada's Maui Honeymoon Travellogue:

Day 1 - August 4, 2000

We were up early this morning for Shannon Angel to pick us up for the airport at 7am.  Our flight departed at 9.10am.  We made it in good time to the terminal.  Our seats were almost at the very back row of the plane per usual. We didn't have trays that dropped down from the seats in front of us because the rows were off set from the ones in front of us.  We had high-school like desk tables to try to eat on.  So we didn't get any of our thank you cards done, and we once again were seated in the interior seats so we didn't even have a window to look out of.  Each of us read our books and nearly finished them.

We were first in line for the inter-island shuttle...well, behind the premier passengers, first class passengers, and those with small children or needing extra assistance boarding.  Next time I'm getting Jada a cane.

Once we arrived at Kahalui airport, we picked up our gray Mustang convertible and laughed at the people who for some reason had never actually seen a Mustang convertible and were trying to fit 4 grown adults and all of their luggage into one.  We didn't bother putting the top down since it was very windy out and ended up raining anyway.  There have been constant light showers drifting through since we arrived here at the Maui Tradewinds (http:\\mauivacationrental.com).  But the sun is still shining just off shore.  We stopped off at the Ho'okipa Lookout where we took a few pictures of the ocean with the surfers and wind surfers out on the waves just waiting to hang 10 on a tasty wave.

Let me talk about this place for a minute.  We have the whole bottom level of this really nice house.  It is essentially a bed & breakfast except we provide our own breakfast.  It is totally open floor plan facing west.  We have a nice stereo with cd player and VCR.  The hosts, Beverly Livingston and David Dantes, have provided us with a fresh fruit assortment consisting of apple-bananas, grapes, a pineapple, lemons, apples, oranges, and pears.  We also have use of a bbq grill, sauna, Jacuzzi spa, washer and dryer, beach mats, chairs, and a list of local eateries, pamphlets, hike books, etc.  Its really quite nice, and everything we'll need to be self-sufficient for our stay.  It is still raining as I type this...not hard or anything.  Just misting really.

We are formulating our plan for tonight.  It'll likely consist of picking up some dinner (we're 3 hours behind Oregon), and deciding what to do tomorrow.  I have no idea what to expect as far as traffic or weather for the weekends.  We may just try to stay off the beaten path until Sunday.  In the mean time perhaps we'll do some hikes and hang on the beach.  If the clouds keep hanging around like this, there won't be much point to going to the volcano, Haleakala.

We went to dinner in Paia at Charlies Pub.  I had a really good cheeseburger with Onion rings and Jada had a chicken calzone.  Then we went across the street to the Paia General Store for some cereal and sandwich makin' materials.  After that it was back to the house to plan our adventures for the following day, and perhaps spend some time in the hot tub to sooth my achin' back from the 5 hour plane ride.

Just finished trying to finalize our plans for the week.  We just made it in on a boat ride from Lahaina to the Molokini crater after a last minute cancellation on Sunday (http:\\www.sailtrilogy.com).  We're trying to get in on a Luau in Lahaina that night as well, but I have to call back later because we have been wait listed.  We also got booked for the trip by bike after sunrise on the dormant volcano Haleakala.  A 38 mile downhill...man I wish I had my bike instead of some crappy rental.  :)  It would have been very smart of us to do all the reservations in advance of arriving on the islands.  That's our tip to you, the reader.  But we're not doing too badly.

The day ended in rain so no hot tubbing.  bummer.  extremely tired now.  Its after 1am Portland time.  see you tomorrow.
