The story revolves around a Victorian hotel in Louisiana. This building is one of the seven gates of hell. The film starts off in 1927. and shows a mob of men breaking into the hotel, where they capture an artist working in one of the rooms.the mob then drags him into the basement, where they lash him with chains, crucify him and throw acid over his face.

The scene then shifts to 1981, when a young woman inherits the building. She begins to renovate it, but straight away, strange things start happening. A builder plunges from a scaffold after seeing a blind girl staring at him from a window. A plumber has his eyes gouged out by a disembodied arm in the basement.

Meanwhile, the hotel's new owner encounters a ghostly blind girl standing in the highway, who warns to give up the hotel as soon as possible. Despite this, she keeps the building. Meanwhile, one of the hotel workers discovers the body of the plumber. At the same instant, an ancient corpse pops up from the flooded basement.

This corpse is taken to the local hospital, where doctors work to analyse it in the morgue. However, they leave the room, at which point the plumber's wife enters to view the body of her husband. the woman then dresses her dead husband in a wedding jacket, before seeing something totally terrifying . Her young daughter runs in from outside, only to see her mother's face melting as liquid pours onto it from an overturned conical flask. The juices from her head flood the floor, and in an attempt to avoid them, the girl attempts to hide in a freezer. However, she discovers that the corpses therein are far from dead. The sight that she sees is enough to make her blind.

Meanwhile, the hotel's owner has befriended the local doctor. Strange things continue to happen, until she is again visited by the blind girl, who tells her that the building is one of the seven gates of hell, and the artist opened this gate many years earlier. The owner visits his old room, and finds a strange book called "Eibon", and sees an image of him crucified on the wall.

Suddenly, the horror starts as each person associated with the hotel is killed . The architect responsible for renovating the building has his face ripped to pieces by a hoard of spiders. A worker at the hotel is attacked by the animated corpse of the plumber, and has their head impaled on one of the rusty nails used to crucify the artist decades beforehand. The blind girl, who appears to have been granted a reprieve from being trapped in hell, is visited by a bunch of zombies led by the artist, and eventually is killed in spectacularly gory fashion by her own guide dog.

The doctor and the hotel owner realise that the building is a portal to hell. They visit the hospital, only to find the corridors filled with the walking dead., they run downstairs, only to find themselves, back in the basement of the hotel. They wonder towards a light... and suddenly appear on a barren, cursed landscape. They turn round, only to find the same view stretching for miles. They are in hell.
