How Do We Extract the Honey?
Here is
the pile of "supers" that John pulled from the hives. Each one weighs up
to 60 pounds and is filled with frames of honey.
This is
the extractor that is used to extract the honey from the frames.
John is
uncapping the frames, i.e. removing the wax coating that the bees put over the
honey.
Uncapped frames loaded in the extractor. Once the extractor is fully
loaded, John turns it on and it spins and spins and spins all of the honey out
from the frames into a puddle of honey at the bottom of the extractor.
Honey being unloaded from the extractor into a 5 gallon bucket. Our honey
is not that dark, the lighting was poor yesterday.
The
ultimate result is freshly bottled honey for sale from
JK Bees.
The house was under siege while the honey was being extracted. The bees
wanted their food back!
Here is a swarm photo; of a group of bees that were
trying to form a new hive. John successfully corraled them and put them
back.
