SOME GERMAN GENEALOGY TERMS
For anyone serious about reading the old German records, I recommend
you purchase "German-English Genealogical Dictionary", by Ernest Thode.
It is sold by many of the commercial genealogical sellers. It deals with
translation of commonly encountered terms and includes many abbreviations
one encounters in the records. For example, "sel." --> selig --> deceased
is a common abbreviation. It also includes Latin terms used in many of the
early records. It is now in its third printing. An excellent aid when
reading old German Church records. It has many words and spelling
variations which I cannot find in my regular German English Dictionary.
"German English Genealogical Dictionary,"
published by:
Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc.,
1001 N. Calvert St.
Baltimore, Md 21202.
I generally interpret "Kirchspiel" as "parish". A parish served a
surrounding area. Many small villages did not have churches and
were served by a church in a neighboring town. For example, in the
area you are talking about, my Rippe ancestors lived in a small town
without a church and their records are at "Kirchspiel Blender".
Amt can have various meanings for types of offices, e.g., Standesamt,
but your use is probably for the term "Oberamt", which is similar to
the U.S. county seat, the adminstrative office for a geographic area.
Applications for permission to emigrate were made at the Oberamt for
the area the applicant lived in. Sometimes it is abbreviated as O/A.
