The Aeneid in English

Writers have been translating the Aeneid into English for over 500 years. William Caxton usually gets credit for producing the first translation, and the year most commonly given is 1490. Caxton's work was, in fact, a translation of a French paraphrase of the Aeneid, so perhaps credit for being first should go to Gavin Douglas, whose translation existed in manuscript form by 1525. However, Douglas wrote in Scots, an Anglic dialect to be sure, but perhaps not English, so we may have to look further. One tradition Douglas seems to have started is to criticize those translators who have gone before. Douglas has this to say about Caxton's Aeneid:

His buk is na mare like Virgil, dar I lay,
Than the nyght oule resemblis the papingay.
My keyboard is not so sharp as Douglas's pen, so don't expect such witticisms from me. But I do hope to draw together information about the various English translations of the Aeneid on this site. I expect that many of you already know more about this field than I do, and I ask that you let me know of any material (book reviews, biographies, etc., online or printed) that might be useful. If there is a 20th or 21st century equivalent of Conington's essay "The English Translators of Virgil" I would like to hear about it.

As time permits, I hope to add some general comments on the problems involved in translating the Aeneid, along with information about specific translations. With luck, perhaps I can add a new translation every two or three weeks. I invite corrections and comments, opinions and counter-opinions, and links to other sites of interest.
