Corneal John Mack II
May 1, 1936 - December 7, 2013
Annapolis, Maryland
Corneal John Mack II, 77, also known as "Lung John, UJ, and Johnny," a resident of Annapolis since 1985 and formerly of Washington D.C., Virginia, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe, died at home December 7 surrounded by his family and friends, after over five years battling Melanoma.
Born May 1, 1936 in Washington, D.C. to the late Corneal and Helen Mack, John and his only sister, Marilyn, spent their childhood in residence at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C., where from 1941-1973 their father served as the General Manager and later as Vice President. John was a graduate of Georgetown Preparatory School, University of Notre Dame, Harvard University, and University of Virginia. He spent much of his career working for the University of Maryland University College's overseas program, providing higher education to the U.S. Military community. He worked abroad in Newfoundland, Iceland, Germany, Vietnam and Thailand. In 1985 he moved into his family's Annapolis home, married Tasanee Soontornsaratool, and adopted her young son, Arthur. After 1990, he was self employed at Tolly Environmental Systems.
John listened to NPR on his Walkman radio every day. He enjoyed reading the Washington Post, taking daytime naps with his tabby cat, Chili, at his side, playing with his son's dog, June, eating delicious food and drinking good beer, picking steamed crabs, finding the best prices on groceries, riding his lawn mower with his hat and big mug of iced tea, and riding roller coasters with his family and friends. John participated in his Bay Ridge community through meetings and volunteer activities. He was a member of the University of Maryland University College "Overseas Marylanders" and Harvard Business School alumni association.
John is survived by his wife Tasanee Soontornsaratool Mack; son, Arthur Soontornsaratool and his wife Emily of Baltimore; sister, Marilyn Mack Jarboe of Washington, D.C.; nieces and nephew, Suzanne Simpson of Fort Collins, CO, Teri Jarboe of Washington, D.C., Leslie Leadbeater of Ridgley, Mary Catherine Jarboe of Washington, D.C., Sheila Laybourn of Germantown, and Jenifer Bouchard of Washington D.C, and John Jarboe Jr. of Davidsonville; 12 grand nieces and nephews; and a great-grand niece and nephew.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, December 15, at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 16 at St. John Neumann Church, 620 N. Bestgate Rd., Annapolis. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.

BOZEMAN DAILY CHRONICLE, May 13, 1939. Front page, first column, top. "Mrs. Leffingwell Dies Just Short of Century Mark", "Bozeman Woman Who Would Have Been 100 on Sunday, Passes Yesterday. Was Ardent Angles, Enjoyed Flying"
Text: Mrs. Abigail Leffingwell, who would have been 100 years old tomorrow died at the summer home of her daughter, Mrs. M. H. White, in Gallstin canyon, Friday afternoon. A Native of Ohio, Mrs. Leffingwell spent most of her life in and near Wonewoc, Wisc. She came to Bozeman two years ago to live with her daughter. At 97 she went to California, and in company with her daughter made an auto trailer trip along the Pacific coast. Highlights of that time were her receiving a permanent wave in Hollywood, fishing for salmon in the Columbia, and an airplane ride at Augusta, Ore. An ardent outdoor woman and fishing enthusiast. Mrs. Leffingwell on her trip from California obtained fishing licenses in Washington, Idaho and Montana. She had a 1938 Montana fishing license and was planning to obtain one here this summer. Born Abigail Moore, May 14, 1839 in Avon, Lorraine County, Ohio, she went with her parents at the age of eight years to Wisconsin, which was then the "far west", where her playmates were Indian children. At 14 years she became the bride of Samuel Leffingwell, who later was a Civil War soldier. Mr. Leffingwell died in 1914. When she was celebrating her 99th birthday, Mrs. Leffingwell, a pert lively old lady, jigged tot the tune of Turkey in the Straw, had another permanent, smoked her corn cob pipe, and got ready to go fishing. Mrs. Leffingwell looked 30 years younger than her age. Her favorite diversions of fishing and dancing were supplemented by her enjoyment in smoking her corn-cob pipe. She especially liked young people, and she often said, "When there's anything goin on I want to be there." She suffered an attack of the flu during the past winter, however, and had been in failing health since. Surviving relative are the daughter, Mrs. White; 11 grandchildren ; ten great grandchildren and, one great great grandchild. A son, Myron 83 years old, died last June. The remains were shipped last night to Wonevoc, where funeral services will be held Sunday, May 14, the date which would have been Mrs. Leffingwell's 100th anniversary. Mrs. White and daughter, Helen White, accompanied the body to Wisconsin.
