Birth: 1597
Rattlesden
Mid Suffolk District
Suffolk, England
Death: Nov. 6, 1643
Hartford
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA

Born by about 1597 (based on estimated date of marriage). Came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 (based on grant of land at Cambridge on 4 August 1634). First settled in Cambridge; moved to Hartford in 1636. Died 6 November 1643 (died while dictating a nuncupative will on that date). (At a Connecticut Particular Court in early 1644 [probably in March], the "jury find that John Ewe, by misadventure, was the cause of the death of Tho[mas] Scott. The said John Ewe is fined to pay five pounds to the country and ten pounds to the widow Scotte").
Married by about 1622 Ann _____. "Ann Scott widow" married (2) at Hartford 7 November 1644 THOMAS FORD {1630, Dorchester}. She died at Northampton on 5 May 1675.

Birth: 1590, England
Death: May 5, 1675
Northampton

Thomas Scott married by about 1622 Ann _____.
They had four children: Thomas, Mary Porter, Sarah Stanley & Elizabeth Loomis.
Thomas Ford married (2) Hartford 7 November 1644 "Ann Scott widow," widow of Thomas Scott. Thomas Scott's daughters all married in the early 1640s, so their mother must have been born very early in the century (if not before 1600), and all these daughters were probably born in the 1620s. But the widow of Thomas Scott, after her marriage with Thomas Ford, is supposed to have had a daughter who married in 1676/7, and so may have been born about 1657. For all this to happen, the widow of Thomas Scott must have been a second wife, and not the mother of his daughters.
She had one child by her 2nd marriage: Ann (Ford) Newberry.
She died Northampton 5 May 1675.

William Carter was born about 1830 in Tiverton, Devon, England. William was the son of William Carter, a tailor also, born in the same village. By 1851 William was apprenticed to Arthur Lewis, from Devon as well, in St. George the Martyr, Middlesex, England. He married Jane Stone, daughter of Robert and Jane Biss Stone, on 10 Oct. 1852 in Camden, Middlesex. In 1861 William had his own business in St. Mary Islington, Middlesex, England. The family lived at 23 Upper Winchester St.

William still practiced the trade of tailor when in 1870 he immigrated to Ontario, Canada in search of a better life. He sailed on the SS Moravian and arrived in Quebec on 21 August 1870. He lived with the John B. Griffin family in Simcoe, Ontario in 1871. Jane and all the children, except Sarah Jane, came to Canada on the SS Moravian's return trip in May, 1871. The children were Elizabeth Lavinia, William George, Herbert John, George Owen and Edward C. Maud May was born in Simcoe, Ontario in 1873. William and Jane spent the rest of their lives living first in Simcoe, then in Otterville, Ontario, Canada. The William Carter Tailor Shop operated in Otterville from before 1879 to when he sold the building to Joseph Fish in 1903. The address was 5 South Main St. Otterville, ONT. The Carter Tailor Shop advertised on the Hall Curtain painted by Tom Dearle in 1882.Jane, William's wife, died in 1899 in Otterville. Elizabeth Lavinia, their second daughter, must have returned to England to marry James William Leadbeatter. In 1898 she was widowed and in 1901 William went back to England to bring her and her children back to Canada with him on the Saxonia.
Elizabeth Lavinia Carter Leadbeatter's son, James William Leadbeatter, Jr., died in 1902 of consumption and was laid near where Jane Carter was buried.

All of William and Jane's children eventually immigrated to the United States. William lived with his youngest daughter, Maud, in 1910 in Waltham, Massachusetts. William died in 1915. He and Jane are buried together in St John's Anglican Cemetery, Otterville, Ontario, Canada.
