John Sterk, age 78, of Lynden went to be with his Lord on November 7, 2005 with his family at his bedside at The Lynden Manor after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 2, 1927 to John and Minnie (Plooster) Sterk in Harrison, SD. John served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and in 1954, he married Nellie Korevaar, his beloved wife of 51 years. Together they began farming and in 1959 the family moved from Harrison, SD to Lynden, WA. John was employed at Mt. Baker Plywood for 29 years, retiring in 1989.

He delighted in his family and the camaraderie shared with friends at local coffee shops. He loved playing cards, going for walks, playing games, doing seek-a-word puzzles and watching the Mariners. His quick wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Pete, Willis, Alvin, Henry and Ernest and sister, Jenny Beckman.

Visitation hours will be Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, 1 to 8 PM at Gillies Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Fri. Nov. 11, 12:15 PM at Monumenta Cemetery with a Memorial service following at 1:00 PM at Faith Reformed Church in Lynden.

Nellie Sterk, age 83, of Lynden, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Whatcom Hospice House.

Nellie was born in Corsica, South Dakota on March 14, 1933, to parents John and Gertrude (Beukelman) Korevaar. She grew up attending Corsica schools with brother Adrian and sisters Effie and Rosemary.

Nellie married John Sterk, February 12, 1953 in Corsica and together they had three children.

Nellie worked for the Lynden School District as a cook and lunch aide. She loved to travel, play cards and games, gathering with family and friends. Nellie enjoyed baking and sharing desserts and singing.

Nellie is preceded in death by husband of 52 years John, brother Adrian Korevaar and her parents.

She is survived by children: Jody (Ted) Malinowski, Gene (Lorraine) Sterk, Alan (Sandi) Sterk and extended family, Bobbie (Tim) Yazzalino; grandchildren: Ryan (Katie) Sterk, Jeff (Samantha) Diehl, Jen (Omar) Favela, Kami (Chuck) Betker and Hayley and Natalie Corder; great-grandchildren: Colden Sterk, Charlee Betker, Cameron Diehl, Cole Diehl, Olivia Favela; sisters: Effie Uttecht and Rosemary Grosz; special friend, Bob VanMersbergen; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

You are invited to join the family for Visitation from 5 – 7 pm, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Gillies Funeral Home. Graveside will be 1:15 pm, Thursday, February 23 at Monumenta Cemetery followed by a 2 pm, Memorial service at Faith Reformed Church with Pastor Jim Carberry officiating.

Henry Sterk of Lynden died at St. Joseph Hospital on Thursday, October 28. He was 75.

Visitation hours will be from 1 to 9 pm on Thursday, November 4, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.

Graveside services will be at 1:15 pm on Friday, Nov. 5, in Monumenta Cemetery followed by funeral services at 2:00 pm in the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Rev. Paul Hansen officiating.

Henry was the son of John and Minnie (Plooster) Sterk and was born in Harrison, South Dakota on March 5, 1929. He grew up in South Dakota and served with the US Army in Korea from 1951 to 1953. In 1955 Henry moved to Lynden and was married to Betty VanBeek on June 25, 1957. Henry became a stockholder at Mt. Baker Plywood in 1960 and worked there until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Sterk was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden and enjoyed woodworking.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Pete, Ernie, Willie and Alvin and a sister Jennie Beckman.

Henry is survived at home by his wife Betty; children Cheryl and Paul Roobol of Belmont, MI., Noreen Harrell and partner Ken Dixon of Bellingham, Jerry and Ingrid Sterk of Ontario, CA, Karen and Mike Slotemaker of Bozeman, MT., and Debbie and Kevin Sterk of Lynden; thirteen grandchildren; brothers John and Nellie Sterk and Bob and Sena Sterk of Lynden and Mike and Angie Sterk of Harrison, SD; sisters Henrietta and Dan Chitwood of Lynden, Leona and Henry Kirwin in Oklahoma, Edith and Raymond Porter of Geddes, SD and Joanne and Don VanderHeiden of Platte, SD; and numerous other relatives.

Ervin R Beckman was born March 2, 1946 in Mitchell, SD to Clyde and Jennie (Sterk) Beckman, where he joined older sister Gladys and became big brother to Evelyn, Melba, and Gary. He grew up in Platte and graduated from Platte High School in 1965. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany from 1966 to 1968. After being discharged, he returned to Platte, SD and worked for various farmers in and around the Platte area.

He moved to Chamberlain and started his welding career, first for working for Harry's Welding and continued his on-the-job learning with Dick Williamson's welding.

Erv married Eugenia "Jean" Hanig from Reliance, SD on October 19, 1973, resulting in two daughters. In February of 1982, he started Beckman's Welding and Repair.

He took pride in his yard. He enjoyed welding, racing cars, gardening, and cruising. He is a member of The Lakers Car Club and The National Welders association.

He was a team player in his daughters' and grandchildren's lives.

Erv passed away May 6th 2020 at home doing what he enjoyed, mowing his yard.

On his final cruise he was greeted by his parents, his in laws' John and Orvilla Hanig and his brother in law Mark Hanig.

Robert "Bob" Dale Sterk passed away at his Lynden family home on Friday, March 8, 2019. Bob was born July 1, 1957 to parents Teunis "Bob" and Sena (Groothuis) Sterk in Bellingham Washington. He attended Ebenezer Christian School and then Lynden Christian High School graduating in 1975. On June 11, 1983 he married Diane Frazier and together they have two children. Bob operated his own Holstein dairy farm north of Lynden on Guide Meridian for over 40 years. For 10 years of that time he grew and harvested raspberries. Later in life he returned to school and received a welding certificate from Bellingham Technical College. He did contract work for BP Refinery while still dairy farming. Bob loved his wife and children and worked hard to provide for them. Bob is survived by Diane Sterk his wife for 35 years, children Carmen Sterk of Bellingham and Evan Sterk of Bellingham, sisters Marilyn Branion and Ardelle Kooy, younger brother Larry Sterk and numerous extended family and friends. A graveside service remembering Bob was held on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Ten Mile Cemetery. Please share your memories and condolences in the online guest book at www.gilliesfuneralhome.com. Obituary
Diane A. Sterk went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. Diane is remembered for her compassionate and hardworking spirit.

Diane was born on September 21, 1954 in Bellingham, Washington to Robert and Anita (Loft) Frazier. She graduated from Shuksan High School in 1972.

On June 11, 1983 she married Robert “Bob” Sterk and together they have two children. Diane worked hard with Bob on the family dairy farm. She enjoyed taking care of her animals and cooking for her family and friends.

Diane worked for many years at Bellingham National Bank and then at County Furnishings at Fairway Center. She attended First Christian Reformed Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 192 Nickerson St., Ste. 100, Seattle, WA 98109.

Henrietta (Sterk VanderHeiden) Chitwood, age 94, of Lynden, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019. She was born in Harrison, South Dakota to parents John and Minnie (Plooster) Sterk.

Henrietta enjoyed sewing and other arts and crafts, playing cards and games, visiting with friends and family, traveling, and cooking for family dinners. Henrietta was a sales clerk for JC Penny's from 1961 until retirement in 1987.

She married Rean VanderHeiden on June 9, 1942 in Butte, Nebraska. They moved to Washington from South Dakota in 1943. Together they had four children. After Rean's passing in 2000, she later met and married Daniel Chitwood on September 10, 2004 in Lynden.

Henrietta is preceded in death by husbands Rean VanderHeiden in 2000 and Daniel Chitwood in 2013, son Clarence VanderHeiden in 2019, and siblings Peter, Jennie, Bob, Henry, John, Willis, Alvin, and Ernest.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Christian Health Care Center for their kindness, care and compassion.

Clarence Dale VanderHeiden, age 76, passed away at home on Friday, September 27, 2019 in Seattle. Clarence was born in Geddes, South Dakota on January 11, 1943 to Rean and Henrietta VanderHeiden.

Clarence married Nancy Galloway on May 3, 1963 and they were later divorced in 1986.

Clarence owned two gas/service stations in the Seattle area. Though he lived most of his adult life in Seattle, he always enjoyed coming back to Whatcom County to visit old friends and family.

A combined Graveside service with his mother Henrietta Chitwood will be Friday, October 11, 2019 at 10 am at Monumenta Cemetery followed by an 11 a.m. Memorial service at North County Christ the King Community Church.
