John: My friend and I finally made it to the Bash Cemetery, and I took pictures of Rev. Rice Harris' stone, and his wife's. I have not had my digital camera too long, and have been having trouble sending. I will send you 1 picture for a trial send, and please let me know if you get it. Then I will send you two more, one of the cemetery in general. As far as my friend Mertice knows there were no more Rices here in Clark Co., Mo. She thought there may have been some that went to Quincy, Illinois, which is across the Mississippi, not far from here. I believe Quincy may be in Adams County. You might want to check their census.
The day we went to the Bash Cemetery was very hot. We drove a long way in to the country, down a long lane to the log house that Mertice's Bash ancestors built when they first came here. They were known for their maple sugar making, which they had done before they came here. Then we got out and started walking, (a long way), across a very rocky creek bed, around a tall corn field, through the woods, (it looked liked we were in South America), and finally up to a very lovely high knoll where the cemetery is. It is completely overgrown, we are only about 5'2", and the weeds were taller than our heads. But there were some beaten down paths through it, probably where the deer had been. Her grandfather Henry Bash is buried right beside Rev. Rice Harris. Harris' tombstone is a long flat one, and had fallen over and broken into a long time ago. We got the two pieces and slid them together, for photos. Obviously the section with the data on it must have lain face down, it had a thick film of something like mold. Mertice used bleach water to try and clean it, but it did not seem to be very effective, then we chalked it. But I was able to photograph it. His wife's was also down on the ground, but not broken. It had been years before Mertice had been able to find her Henry Bash's tombstone, it was under the soil, but someone in the family was prodding around and found it.
After we left the cemetery we went on down a very narrow rocked road, through some of the prettiest countryside I have ever seen, there were many trees, I am going back in the fall. But then we discovered the bridge was out, so we laboriously got turned around and had to come back the same way we had come. But I got out and stood on part of the bridge, and heard the loveliest sound, the creek was (babbling) over the rocks. As you can tell I love the country. I lived in the St. Louis metropolitan area for years, and hated every minute of it.
I thought you might like a description of a trip to the Bash Cemetery. Let me know if you receive the photo I am going to send next, and I will send you the other two.
Mary Jo.".

It is difficult to make out the number of months. But four is supported by http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Cyprus/9550/revriceharris.html.
