Life-time Lynden resident Leonard VanRy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, August 8, at St. Joseph Hospital following a short illness. He was 88. Len lived a modest life and overcame difficulties making a difference to each person he met through his love of Jesus. The son of William and Dorothy (VanWeerdhuizen) VanRy, he was born on March 11, 1924 and attended Lynden schools. On January 5, 1945 he married Grace VanderGiessen in Lynden and together they operated a dairy farm and raised their family on the Jackman Road. He later became a bus driver for Ebenezer Christian School and then Lynden Christian Schools which spanned 35 enjoyable years. He had been a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church where he also served as janitor for many years. Len served as a S.T.A.R.S. Officer in Lynden and enjoyed gardening. Following Grace's death in 1995, he married Darlene Bennett in April of 1999 and together attended North County Christ the King Church in Lynden. Besides his wife Grace, Mr. VanRy was preceded in death by an infant daughter Deborah in 1958 and siblings, Joe, Gerrit, Maurice, Bill, Bert, Adrian and Hugo VanRy and sisters Lena Bakker and Dorothy Meeboer. He is survived by his wife Darlene; children Arvin (Marcia) VanRy of Alamosa, CO., James (Jenny) VanRy of Creede, CO., Kenneth (Carol) VanRy of Lynden and Judy (John) Burri of Vancouver, WA.; step-children Mike Leech of Birch Bay, Tony Leech of Lynden, Jeri Owen of Bellingham and Patti Brisky of Ferndale; twenty-five grand and forty great-grandchildren; sister Betty (Dennis) DeBoer and brother Cornie VanRy of Lynden and numerous other relatives. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug 12, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Memorial funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug 13, at 4:00 p.m. in North County Christ the King Church in Lynden. Private burial will precede the service in Monumenta Cemetery.
