Perfins - In the collecting world, a "perfin" is typically known as a
postage stamp having "perforated initials" punched into the paper which
were used by businesses to prevent unauthorized use of stamps. In the
realm of revenue/tax stamps, however, perfins were used to identify the
corporate user of the stamp as well being used as a canceling feature
(so the revenue stamp could positively only be used once).
Below are 78
different perfin designs or punched letter cancels used on NY Stock
Transfer Tax
stamps on
their original memorandum document. They are sorted alphabetically by
how the perfin name appears - not by the actual company name. If you
have some of these still on the full document, I
encourage you to keep them intact instead of soaking them off
and losing part of the history behind the tax stamp.
