Analysis

A prototypical size fullback with good height and a solid build, Schmitt has decent speed and is a hard worker who enjoys being coached. He displayed his toughness by playing through knee and ankle injuries during his career at WV; fortunately, there are no lingering injury concerns. His toughness may be better illustrated by the eight facemasks Schmitt has broken through his collegiate career. Schmitt received the Iron Mountaineer Award as the top performer in winter workouts. His hard work in the weight room has resulted in top shelf upper and lower body strength. He shows good awareness as a blocker and has the athletic ability to hit a moving target in space. He does not always maximize leverage in his blocking technique but that is something that can be corrected at the next level. Schmitt is a good receiver who is capable of making plays with the ball in his hands. Unable to make defenders miss while running the ball, Schmitt runs upright too often and must lower his pad level as a rusher in order to maximize his power. He is explosive upon contact and can drive defenders into the ground. Schmitt also shows decent top end speed in out running most front seven players in space.
In conclusion, Schmitt is a throwback fullback who has overcome a lot of adversity and will continue to do so. He has reached near cult-hero status among the WV faithful. He possesses ideal strength, size, and disposition to be an NFL lead blocker. His versatility as a receiver and short yardage runner are an added bonus.
