Analysis

Smith has an excellent combination of size, speed, and athleticism. While he has great speed for a safety, he lacks the sudden burst to be a corner. A third year junior, Smith decided to forgo his senior season. He missed the 2007 Fiesta Bowl because of a broken toe which prohibited him from pushing off. Smith shows good upper body strength in jamming receivers at the line. If he is to remain at CB, it will likely be as a press-coverage player. While Smith played either CB or SS for the Sooners, he initially projects to FS in the NFL because of his lack of experience at CB and size to play SS. He brings added value as a punt and kick returner and is versatile enough to play any secondary position in a pinch. Smith is a solid tackler who also possesses ball skills. In conclusion, Smith is a young, productive, 3-year starter who has upside and versatility. He may lack the short-area burst to be a top-flight CB, but he should be a standout at free safety.
