Engineer

I believe that everyone has a dark side of their past, personality, or life.   A part which they are embarrassed about and that they probably should hide from the world.   For some it's a history of financial irresponsibility.   For U.S. presidential candidates it's often affairs and past illegal drug use.   For manly men it could be a fondness for quiche or Barry Manilow tunes.   For a single man in Seattle, however, the darkest side you can conceive of is to be known as a engineer.

In most places in the US and the world engineering is a fairly well respected profession.   The people in it are known to be a little smarter, more responsible, and more likely to think before acting then the typical Gomer you'll meet out on the street.  They mate  for life at a higher rate then most professions, minimizing their contribution to the creation of single parent households in this country.

The lack of appreciation of engineers in the Seattle area is probably due to their excess numbers relative to the surrounding population.   The aerospace, software, biotech, and manufacturing industries import thousands of engineers each year causing a large imbalance  between the number of highly educated single men and women in the Seattle area.   (Meanwhile, multiple military bases bring in a steady surplus of less educated men) The is particularly evident with 20 to 40 something engineers trolling the streets for a severely limited supply of single females younger then 50.   The 2010 census shows a surplus of about 40,000 non-married 20 to 54 year old men in King County alone.  Pierce and Snohomish Counties add another 24,000 to the surplus.
