Bender Family Lines

My maternal grandmother was the daughter of William Tazwell Fisher and Estella Blake Fisher. My maternal grandfather, John D. Bender is descended from Isaac Bender, a veteran of the War of 1812. Here is some of the information on the family lines I've gathered, I hope you find it useful. I'll be adding information as time allows, check back for updates. For now, I've posted information primarily on my maternal great grandmother's line.

Family Stories

Yankee House Burning on Jerry's Run
The Burning of the Isaac Bender Home

During the Civil War a detachment of Yankee soldiers came across the hill between Hacker Valley and Jerry's Run following an old trail. They went down the left side of the run traveling north. There were some Confederate bushwackers at the foot of the hill probably near the current residence of Stanley Anderson. One of them may have been James McCray. The bushwackers shot and severly wounded one of the Yankees.

The soldiers proceeded, with the wounded one, on down Jerry's Run, to the home of Isaac Bender, located in the civinity of the present site of the Alma Davis home. After slaughtering the Bender's ducks and geese for the evening meal, they encamped for the night. Isaac's wife, Rebecca, later told about the soldiers hanging out blood stained clothing to dry. Obviously they were caring for the wounded.

The next morning the Yankees ordered the Bender family to walk a ways up the hill from the home. After evacuating the family, the soldiers set fire to the house burning it and all household goods.

The Bender family was never sure whether or not the wounded soldier lived. Some report that he died and was buried on the hill near the present home of Calvin Jordan.
