JOHN CARMICHAEL 1847-1925

On Friday June l9th,in the village of Hillsburgh, there passed away one of it's oldest, most esteemed and highly respected citizens in the person of Mr. John Carmichael. Infact Mr. Carrnichael was the oldest citizen in point of residence.

He was born in 1847 in the village of Pine Grove, near Toronto, thence moving to Alton, where he spent his boyhood days. From thence he moved to Hillsburgh where he clerked in the late Mr. Edward Howe's store; then going to Georgetown and afterwards returning to Hillshurgh When he entered partnership with Mr Wm Donaldson. For thirty-five years they carried on a very successful business.

He married in l897 to Miss Grace McMurchy, daughter of the late Angus McMurchy, there was born to them one son John, of Detroit; and four daughters Margaret, who is deceased; Mrs L.R. Clarke, of Toronto; Mrs Dr. Durnan, North Dakota; and Marjorie at home.

The late Mr. Carmichael was village Justice of the Peace for many years. He was a Liberal in politics and a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church on whose Board of Management he served as manager and treasurer for a considerable time.

A very wide circle of friends extend to the bereaved wife and family their deepest sympathy. The Funeral services were conducted at the family residence by Rev. A.W. Hare, minister of St Andrews Church. The interment taking place in Huxley's Cemetery.

John Carmichael


Hillsburgh June 22 - This village's oldest business man was laid to rest here this afternoon in the person of John Carmichael. Deceased passed away Friday evening following a brief illness. He was 78 years of age, born here, and for 35 years a partner of the firm of 'Donaldson & Carmichael. Rev A.W. Hare officiated at the house and grave. Mrs Carmichael, one son, and three daughters survive.
