Comments: Great site. I'm James Markham Carmichael living with my family in the piedmont area of Virginia. I'm the son of David Curry Carmichael, son of David McNabb Carmichael who immigrated from Belfast in about 1910. David McNabb Carmichael is the son of Robert Carmichael who settled in Belfast after striking it rich after finding gold or silver in Queensland Australia in the 1880s or 1890s. He then founded a shipbuilding company and his company put the metal "skin" on the Titanic. Robert Carmichael was married to Sarah McNabb. Two of my grandfather's brothers went back to Austrailia and other siblings stayed in Belfast. If you are a Crmichael in Belfast or Australia we may be related. I related some geneological infromation-if this looks familiar to you please E-Mail me!

Comments: Thanks for such a great site! I have been doing some work on early graduates of the University of Toronto, and I was happy to find some extra information on John MacMurchy, School of Practical Science graduate of 1896 who went on to work with Westinghouse in Pennsylvania from the turn of the century until the 1920s (at least). I wasn't aware he died in 1954 and I am going to try to find an obituary. I do have some information on his birth and marriage. His date of marriage was September, 1898 (Provincial Archives of Ontario/Marriage Registry/1898-015287). He gave his place of birth as "Hillsburgh, Ontario" at that time. My records note that the marriage took place in Whitby and not Guelph. There is no doubt that it was Alice Jordan he married, I didn't have the middle name. Indeed, my records have him as "John Alexander McMurchy". The discrepancies don't bother me, because the Pennsylvania births of his children and the birthdate are decisive. I have another John Andrew McMurchy in my database, an arts graduate from the 1880s who was born in 1865 in York County, Ontario, and died in Toronto in 1893. I am not sure if he is one of your date-unknown John McMurchy's in the family tree, but none of the dates seem to match. I have no good information on him, student records from the time were burnt in a fire in 1890. But thanks for the lead on the other John, and if I learn more I will pass it on.

Comments: I am a net addict. Wanted to see any genealogical sites with family names. Great grandmother was Nancy Tamar Carmichael, born in Mississippi (I'm not sure where) around 1861 or so. Anyone that could help, I would appreciate it. Also, if you have any info. about my great-grandad, John Steele Gordon(b.1859) let me know. I want to know about the Carmichael and Gordon family trees. Thanks

Comments: I found my parents listed in the Carmichael archives at the Daughters of the American Revolution. My mother Betty Ann Hopkins Carmichael, is a member. So far, I can trace back to 1702 with Cornelious Carmichael as my oldest direct descendant. I would like to enter my name to the tree branch I am related to. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Comments: The William Logan pages are indeed interesting, and reflect many of the stories I heard growing up as a g-grandson of the Civil War captain. I have visited the Barron cemetery; the Mattie Logan Bowman about the mis-carved gravestone is true (she herself told me that tale). I have in my possession a number of Logan artifacts: some tools he used as a shoemaker and harness-maker, and his sword (not the one he allegedly broke, of course). I also would like to share w/ the genealogy site some of the documents in my possession relating to his military career, including hospital documents and letters. His second wife saved all of his Civil War letters but they disappeared after the death of Nannie Logan Hofelt. I read them as a child. William Logan was well educated for his time, his vocabulary and handwriting were distinguished. I also know that he read widely and deeply. I have parts of "Josephus," the ancient philosopher, a book that he owned and read. Anyone wanting copies of the documents I have, please send your snail mail address and I will send xeroxes. Comments: Matt, you might not remember me, but I am Barbara (Kryger) Thompson, oldest son, Joe. I remember you as kids visiting your house over the holidays and your dad as a postman who delivered mail in my old neighborhood on Rochelle, Detroit, MI. I want to personally thank you for the hard work and research into the family history. You website brought tears to my ears and a deep realization on how much I did not know about my family history. I knew about grand-mom and knew she was German and grand-dad died when my mother was a little girl. I have always wondered about my history, but never had any time to research. You have done a great thing and putting it on the internet was a greater thing so I could learn. I always thought we were part of a long chain and our family history is just another link in that chain. The last time I hear from your family was in the Gulf War. My recent history: When the Army had its big downsizing back in 1993 the Army didn't require my services anymore after 14 years. So, I left active duty in June of 1994 and Rose and I settled in Washington D.C. I joined the Army Reserve, two weeks after moving to Washington D.C. and I have now crossed the twenty-second year mark last April. The irony of the whole situation is as an Army Reserve officer the Army has called me to do service in Haiti, and supportin Bosnia. Who know I might be going back to Iraq. I have always found that to be very strange. Not good enough to be on active duty, but in high demand when they need help. I always knew the skills I learned as an Infantryman wouldn't translate to civilian life, so the last ten years I have been going to night school and getting specialize training in business, contracting, procurement, information services, and taking classes just for the fun of learning. When I arrived in Washington D.C., I was lucky to get an entry level contracting job at the Defense Logistics Agency. I started my career back on the bottom and I have managed to work my way up to

Comments: Hello Matt, I just read the piece on Capt. Logan, it was excellent. I just thought you would like to know I have his sword from the Cavalry and his commission paper. Other relatives have letters and other things of his. My grandfather's nickname was 'Cap' because he was the grandson of William Logan (his name was William Logan Hofelt). William Logan was a very respected man and old-timers will still recognize and revere the name. Thanks for the great article!

Comments: This web site was fascinating and I was able to trace back my mother's family name of Naylor roots to the Routley/Routly family. This past summer the Naylor family hosted a large Naylor family reunion, showing the homestead that has been in the family since the 1800s (in Cameron Ontario) and is mentioned as the birthplace for many of the Naylor's listed. Thank you, I enjoyed it very much.

Comments: The Carmichaels from Quebec City (over 750 currently)are all direct descendants from James Carmichael born in Ballintoy village situated at the very tip of Northern Ireland near the Giant's Causeway. His parents were Daniel Carmichael and Catherine McGlynn. This James arrived in Quebec City in approx. 1818 and married Marie Bédard. The entire family became french overnight. Would like to know more about his parents Daniel and Catherine. Anyone researching Carmichael family in Northern Ireland in the mid 1770's? Thanks.

Comments: Hello I have come across the Carmichael Family Tree on line. Under the "H" is Holzapfel. That is my last name (or should I say my married name). The Holzapfel family to whom I belong knows very little of their past because of no searching into the past. I don't have any information here at work - what I do have is at home. It would be just great if we found our past. What I do know is that my father-in-law's dad (Frank Holzapfel) use to live in the USA, but he and another person moved to Canada (I think his brother) and Frank stayed here while the other person went back to the states. Frank was raised by a family named Metzsgar (spelling?). These people are not related - just family friends. The reason they raised Frank is because his parents died. What I do know off the top of my head is that Frank came from the Ohio district. Frank farmed in the Odessa, Saskatchewan area for many years. Frank's wife's name was Clara. I would be delighted to give more information and see if we are in your family tree. Please contact me at my home e-mail holzapfel@sk.sympatico.ca. We live in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. Hope to hear from you soon. Oh, my name is Cheryl Holzapfel and my husband's name is Dean Holzapfel. Dean's dad is John Holzapfel and Frank is John's dad. Bye for now.

Hello Matt, are you the famous Matt of the web site? if you are , you are to be highly commended for all your work.

I noticed your response to different people on the genealogy forum. There has been alot of discussion on Mary Sikes and Samuel Carter. Our James Washington Carmichael out of Bienville Parish, Louisiana is most likely not the son of this Mary. Her children were living in his house in the 1850 census, they do carry carmichael given names.

However, my aunts did genealogy when it was very difficult and not high tech starting back into the 1950's. They went to every source imaginable from records to rest homes to churches and wrote in hand. They have indicated the parents could be William and Nancy Columbus out of Georgia. Also that James Washington had a sister named Mary
Carmichael. The Mary everyone talks about could have been an aunt, a sister, a cousin. She is not the mother. We are trying very dilligently to prove parentage for James Washington because

Thanks for an excellent MacMurchy resource!

My name is James G. Galloway. My mother is Verna Louise MacMurchy (b.1932, Egbert, Ont.). She is the daughter of Donald Bell MacMurchy (of MacMurchy Settlement). She currently lives in Brantford, Ont. (married to William G. Galloway).

She has read through the info on the 1941 reunion in King Township. She claims however that this took place earlier, perhaps 1939, or 40. She recalls attending with her family as a child, and recalls that her younger sister Margaret (Patterson - who is 7 years younger, and currently lives in London, Ont.) was at most 1yr old (making the reunion 1941). Could it have been a 100 year anniversary?  J. Galloway Guelph, Ont.

Hello!

I am reading your terrific webpage "Carmichael Family OnLine" and want to say first how well done it is-- informative, readable, and useful to non-Carmichaels also :) I don't know if this is the right forum for my tidbit, but I will give it to you in case it will help somebody. I just heard from an older MacDougall relative in Ontario that the Will of Dugald McDougall who d: 10 MAR 1874 in Biddulph, mentions an "adopted daughter Mary Blue" who inherits many household furnishings in lieu of money. I noticed the Mary Blue in Scotland on your page and I know Blue is an immigrant name, so perhaps someone will recognize this Mary or will have been looking for her. I have no age for her, but do know that Dugald and family lived in Blanshard from 1855-1872ish, so she may be listed in his household on the Ontario 1871 census, which would give her age. My Wheeler/Mac-McDougall database is online here:

Hi,

Do you konw anyone who does genealogy about Carmichael-family in British Columbia, Canada, or has something info.

My fathers cousin Tyyne Maria Altin (born March 5. 1898, Wellington, B.C.)married Oct. 16. 1915 in Ladysmith, B.C., Gordon Burns Carmichael (born 14 March 1892 in Nanaimo B.C.). Tyyne Maria was only 17 years old when they got married and died five years later to tuberculosis Aug. 16. 1920.

I would like to know if they had any children and descendants in Canada. I suppose that Gordon Burns remarried after her death. Tyyne Maria was a daughter of Maria Kosola and Juho Altin, both from Finland. If you can help I would be pleased.

Regards, Eero Kujanpaa,  Helsinki, Finland

I've just started to research, my grandfather was Frank Carmichael, estimated date of birth is March 1886. Unsure if he was born in Ireland, some stories that he lived in Ontario for a while. He travelled to the Northwest Territories (NT) and settled in Aklavik, NT, Canada around 1925. He died in 1970 in Aklavik. If anyone has information that may be helpful, please e mail. I enjoyed your site and hope to contribute in the future so we can have a site for the Northwest Territories.

I do not know if you can help me or not, but I thought that it was worth a try. I am looking for my bilogical father. His name is James Edward Carmichael. I was born in Kalamazoo, MI in April of 1967. He was living in the same area, and I have been told that he has at least 2 other children - one a son who may also be named James Carmichael. My mother believes that he had a sister that married a Native American. All of this information is based on events of over 30 years ago. When I saw that you have done extensive research in Michigan, I thought that maybe you have come across something over the years. His name was never on my birth certificate, so there are no adoption
records for me to search. All I have is word of mouth, and about a thousand James Carmichael's in the phone book.... Any assistance you may be able to provide would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Elton Carmichael   25/Mar/2002:06:40:46
Hi all Carmichaels! My husband's (Elton's) branch of the Carmichael family lives in Swaziland, in Southern Africa and began when his grandfather (I forget his name) came here from Scotland. There are now numerous Carmichaels in Swaziland; in a country dominated by the ruling family, the Dlaminis, the Carmichaels have a definite presence! Most
of them are of mixed blood, have intermarried right from the start with African people. The original Carmichael here, my husband's grandfather, married a woman from Mozambique of the Tonga tribe. Many Carmichaels now have shown an international "tendency" in the other direction, marrying Portuguese, Germans, Italians, and even, in my
case, Canadians - a very interesting, "global" family, which I'm very proud to belong to! Aude Pepin Carmichael

Robert F. Carmichael   17/Mar/2002:11:58:55
Great site, am now in touch with cousin on the West Coast that I have not been in touch with for 50+ years. Great grandfather Archibald came from Glasgow about 1840, settled in Tracadie, Prince Edward Island. Am looking for connection with a Robert Carmichael, suspect he is a brother. They jointly became heirs in 1879 to farm land from a Robert who had died intestate(?). My prior research shows Archibald's parents to be Ronald and Mary Campbell, no mention of a Robert being a sibling.

hi, well, get ready for this one! my family lineage begins with David Carmichael, a bastard son of a Scottish slave/ land owner Carmichael and a slave in Texas.
David married an American Indian named Pomalo. three to four generations later was my grandmother Bernina, also American Indian, and African American mixed, who married a Carmichael, hence my mother Edna Louis Carmichael, born 1922, from Texas, died 1990. i am the last of the line, and to top it off, was adopted. but i am proud of my name, and my heritage. i hope to write finish a book of these incredible Carmichael women. they were strong, independant, successful, and true examples of living grace.
thanks for the great site! oh, another little coicedence.... when i was 7 years old, new to a private girl's school in Potomac, Maryland, my first baby-sitter was Ceci Carmichael, of a caucasian family, but of direct scottish Carmichael lineage. cool, no? kind regards to all, erika

I don't know if you respond to emails or not. You have a wonderful site. I am specifically interested in the Kryger site. My great grandfather came from Slesvig, Gram, Denmark in 1880.His name was Anders Jorgen Kryger. He was born in 1857 in Denmark. I have extensive information about his wife, Kjestine Maire Lund,(daughter of Thomas
Lund and Dorthea Marie (Dora)Dam) but I can't find anything on the Kryger name. Given that he is from the same region as the Krygers on this site, I am wondering if he is related? I don't have the name of  his parents. He and Kjestine knew each other in Denmark and got married in Sheffield ,Pennsylvania in 1880. Do you have someone in the Kryger family that I can contact? Thank you.

Hi, my name is Dawn Paterson, I am the great grand daughter of James Carmichael. My James was born in Elderslie, Dunbartonshire (according to an interview with him in 1918). Other records record his place of birth as "Elderslie" Renfrewshire. He came to New Zealand in 1961, married and lived out his life here. I have been unable to find any Scottish connections for him. He has to be someones son, someones brother. I wonder if you might have a connection to him. Here in New Zealand he worked as a driver for Cobb -&- Co, with many notable firsts to his credit. He also owned a farm in an area close to Dunedin. Family 'stories' tell us that he was a gentleman driver in the old country.
You have a wonderul web site, thankyou for the opportunity to make contact. Regards Dawn.
