Welcome to The Compleat Angler's Visual Guide To Fishing In Middle-Earth.

A QUICK NOTE before you read any further...  There are a LOT of images on this page so it may take quite a while to load, especially if you are on a dial-up connection.  Please be patient.
AN ADDITIONAL NOTE:  This is a work in progress.  I have plans for this page which require additional in-game screen shots and more accomplishments in the game, and most importantly they require time in real life--something I've been unfortunately short of lately.  I'm typing this on 09/04/2008 and it's been two or three months since I updated the page.  Life has thrown a few nasty curves my way, so I'm a bit behind in this page.  During that time a couple key fishing related things have happened.  The first is the release of book 14.  With book 14 the previously useless "special fish" now open up a hidden deed and lead to special trophies displaying many fish on a single plaque.  I haven't had time to fish for all of the special fish again, but I hope to make time.  Book 14 also changed the visual appearance of several screen shot items (namely barter fish), which I just replaced.  The other key fishing related occurence was the summer festival.  It was tied directly to fishing and I have taken screen shots of just about everything festival and fishing related.  I just need to update the page with all of these details.  Stay tuned for advancements.

Onward!

There are other guides and helpful resources regarding fishing in The Lord of the Rings Online, and this page is not designed to answer every question or replace any of those references.  It is designed to provide a basic explanation of fishing in Middle-Earth and a pictorial reference of just about everything fishing related the angler might encounter in The Lord of the Rings Online, everything the angler might deal with as he fishes his way up to the big catch, the 50-pound salmon, and the ultimate goal, fishing proficiency of 200.  These goals require hours and hours of dedication and sifting through a lot of fish--and junk--that end up in a patient angler's inventory.  Some of what you catch will end up on walls and make for attractive trophy decorations.  Some of what you catch will end up as food.  A lot of what you catch will serve no purpose at all.  Such is the joy of fishing.

Over time I hope to picture every fish which may be caught.  For now I have pictured almost all of them.  Every fish pictured is a fish I have caught myself, and while I have caught every standard fish possible I am still working on the full range of salmon, darters, trout and sturgeon.  Originally the darters, trout and sturgeon had no value, but now they unlock hidden deeds and contribute to an impressive (and huge) plaque displaying each of the fish for that variety.  This is incentive to fish each one up, but it will take me time.  Eventually they will all work their way onto this page as I endeavor to make this guide comprehensive.

All standard catches are shown in the order in which they may be caught based on proficiency level, from proficiency level 1 to proficiency level 200.  Special fish (darters, sturgeon, trout and salmon) are pictured after that and are listed alphabetically or, in the case of salmon, by weight.

For specifics and greater details I strongly encourage anglers to see the The Angler's Guide to Fishing in LOTRO, a Lord of The Rings Online Lorebook article that began as a forum thread.  This Lorebook article and the thread before it is the inspiration of forum presence aethelberht, and my heartfelt thanks go to aethelberht for his efforts in putting together The Angler's Guide to Fishing in LOTRO.  Some of the data you'll find on this page, particularly in regard to proficiency numbers, was culled not just from my own experience but from that Guide as well.  I appreciate all the work aethelberht put into The Angler's Guide to Fishing in LOTRO and all of the contributions from those who posted data while The Angler's Guide to Fishing in LOTRO was a forum thread.  You, too, can show your thanks to aethelberht by sending him all the catfish cakes he can eat.  [I say this in jest--please do not send him fish.  I do not want to be responsible for an overabundance of fish cakes stuffing his belly or smelling up his home.]

This page is not intended to be a replacement for The Angler's Guide to Fishing in LOTRO.  With that in mind...  Proficiency level details taken from The Angler's Guide to Fishing in LOTRO are prefaced with words in green.  Proficiency level numbers based on my own in-game information or extrapolation and hunches based on examination of the fishing numbering system are prefaced with words in red.  Please remember, all numbers are guidelines and are not carved in stone.

And so, anglers, your fishing journey begins...

THE HOBBY

First just a little bit about the hobby of fishing in general...

Above: Fishing proficiency 0 out of 200.

Above: Fishing proficiency 200 out of 200 (maximum).

The Basics

To begin fishing you will first need to train in the hobby.  To do so, visit any hobby master.

Once you have trained in the hobby of fishing, you will need to take a look at your hobby panel.

Your hobby panel is a unique tab inside your character journal.  At the bottom of this tab you will find instructions on how to equip a hobby:  "To equip a hobby, drag it from the Hobbies Panel to an available quickslot at the bottom of the game screen."

Technically, you may drag it to any available quickslot anywhere on the screen, not just at the bottom of the game screen, depending on how you have your screen configured.

The hobby of fishing is displayed as the Fishing Action button, the title "Fishing," a brief description, and a proficiency bar that represents your proficiency as you climb from 0 to 200.  To the left are screen shots showing the empty bar (0 out of 200 points) and the full bar (200 out of 200 points).

This is the Fishing Action button:

Hovering the mouse pointer over the Fishing Action button displays a tooltip which matches the description of Fishing in the hobby panel.

Hovering the mouse pointer over the proficiency bar will display a small numerical indicator representing your proficiency out of 200.  This displays beneath your mouse pointer.  This is an example of the display, although the mouse pointer is not visible (mouse pointers do not appear for screen shots).  In this example, the proficiency is 200/200, the maximum proficiency.  More details on proficiency will be noted below.

Dragging the Fishing Action button allows you to place the Fishing Action button in an available quickslot.  The following is an example in which the Fishing Action button has been placed amongst Lore-Master skills on the quickslot bar.  The Fishing Action button in this example corresponds to keyboard key 9, or the mouse may be used to click on it.

Once you have placed the Fishing Action button in your quickslot bar, you need only equip a fishing pole and you are ready to begin fishing.

How To Fish

To fish, you will first need to locate a body of water.  Almost any body of water will do.  Ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, marshes and bogs, grottos...  All will work.  You may fish from bridges, however those bridges must be low to the water.  If the bridge is too high you will be unable to fish.  Water from which you may not fish includes wells, fountains, buckets, small puddles, "invisible water" (where you can hear the splash but see only land), and waterfalls when facing directly into the waterfalls (it is recognized as facing the land behind the waterfall, or open air behind the waterfall).  You must be clear of obstacles, so you need to avoid logs and rocks when casting.  You may wade into the water to fish, but you may not be swimming when you attempt to cast.  You must face water to cast.

Once you are prepared to cast, click the Fishing Action button once.  You will cast your line.  Note that sound effects have been added for casting and reeling in.  If you watch the water, you will see fish moving around the bobber just under the surface.  You may also see fish break the surface of the water.  Eventually a fish will tug on your line, and you will see the bobber drop below the water and your fishing pole bow.  Your stance will also change.  Click the Fishing Action button one more time and you will reel in your catch.  You have a limited time in which to click the Fishing Action button once you have a bite.  If you don't click the button in time, you will catch nothing.  If you don't click the button at all, after a short while you will automatically reel in with nothing.

The Fishing Action button has a very short cooldown, but if you click the button too quickly you might receive the warning that the hobby is not ready yet.  Pause for a second then click the Fishing Action button again to cast your line once again.

Note that combat will interrupt fishing.

Above: The Hobbies: Proficiencies window displays upon catching your first fish (a goldfish).

Above: The Hobbies: Daily Maximum window displays the first time you reach your daily maximum proficiency.

Fishing Proficiency

As you fish you will catch two types of items: fish and junk.  The more fish you catch, the more you will increase your fishing proficiency.  Junk, however, will not increase your proficiency.  As you increase your proficiency you unlock the ability to catch additional types of fish, but, as your proficiency increases, fish of lower levels will stop increasing your proficiency, and you will have to rely upon fish of a higher level to improve.

When you catch your first fish, a goldfish, if you have tutorial hints turned on you will see the Hobbies: Proficiencies window.  This informs you of the following:
"You just increased your proficiency in a hobby! As your skill increases you will open up the possibility of obtaining new or better outcomes. There may be a limit to how many times a hobby can be increased per day."

Because fishing is the only hobby implemented at this time, the only time you will see this window is when you catch your first fish.  If additional hobbies are added later and a character does not choose fishing as the first hobby, it's possible this window will not be displayed after catching the first fish.  And like mentioned above, if tutorial hints are turned off this window will not display.

Each day your fishing proficiency may increase a fixed number of points.  This is known as the daily maximum.  When fishing was first implemented the daily maximum for the first day fluctuated greatly, with reported numbers from 6 to 13.  I believe the current first day maximum proficiency for fishing is 12.  Every day after that has a daily maximum of 10 points.  The first time you reach your daily maximum in a hobby proficiency you will see the Hobbies: Daily Maximum window.  This informs you of the following:
"Every hobby has a maximum daily proficiency and you have reached that maximum in of your hobbies.  You can check your current status in any given hobby by opening the character journal and selecting the Hobby panel.

When you reach your daily maximum proficiency, your proficiency bar color will change from blue to yellow.

Note: For me personally, the lowest first day proficiency maximum I reached was an unexplainable 4 (which makes no sense at all), and the highest was 13.  Almost all of my characters reached a first day proficiency maximum of 12.

THE CATCH:
SPECIAL FISH

When fishing was introduced with book 13, the only special fish that had a use were salmon.  They could be bartered for trophies, and in fact catching the 50-pound salmon was one of the two ultimate goals of fishing.  When book 14 was released three hidden fishing deeds were included.  Upon catching your first darter, trout or sturgeon you will be informed of a new fishing deed.  Catching all 9 of a type of special fish will award you the completed deed and a special trophy featuring all 9 of that variety of fish on 1 plaque.  Fishing up all 9 of each type can be extremely time consuming, and this is not retroactive--if you've caught any of the special fish previously they will not count toward the deed.  Furthermore, simply possessing the fish will not matter.  It cannot be handed off from character to character.  You must catch the fish for it to contribute to the deed.

Once I've accomplished this goal--and it may be a while--I'll attempt to detail this more authoritatively.

The Basics of Fishing

INTRODUCTION

Have you always wanted to take up fishing and get out into the great outdoors where you can enjoy nature while casting your line in the sparkling water?  Well, now is a great time to start!  Fishing is a hobby that can be pursued at your leisure and requires nothing more than a little patience and a fishing pole.

HOW TO FISH

If you have not done so already, you will want to open up the Character Journal and click on the Hobby tab along the top.  Here you will find information about fishing, as well as the Fishing Action button which you will want to assign to a quickslot.

To fish, you will first need to locate a body of water: a lake, river, stream or pond should suffice.  Once you have picked out your fishing spot, you will need to equip your fishing pole and face towards the water.  Press the Fishing Action button once to cast your line.  Once the line has been cast, you will need to wait until you see signs of struggling - the bobber dipping under the water or your fishing pole getting tugged are definite signals.  At this point, you will want to reel in your line by once again pressing the Fishing Action button.  If you have reacted in time, then it should be a pretty safe bet that you have caught something - let us just hope that it is a fish!

Your first fishing-pole is a gift from the hobby-master.  There are surely better fishing-poles available, but this one will do splendidly for a beginner.  You will find that fishing-suppliers sell other equipment such as bait.  Bait can be used to provide an advantage while fishing, as it will typically enhance your chances of catching fish.  Additionally, special types of bait may be available that increase the chances of catching certain types of fish - if you are looking to catch something in particular.

Fishing Deeds

The Salmon King
Deed awarded to characters who catch a 50-pound salmon.
Appears under special Hobbies tab of the Deed Log, and is not visible until completed.
Completion of this deed provides the Title of The Compleat Angler.

Hovering over the deed, The Salmon King, in the left-hand panel displays the following tooltip:
"The Salmon King: Only the most skilled - and lucky - fisher can make a catch of this size!"

Hovering over the requirement, Catch a 50lb Salmon!, in the right-hand panel displays the following text, under the mouse pointer:
"One of the finest catches of your career, this fish will make a fine trophy indeed!"

Everything Changes...

Over time everything changes.  When fishing was first implemented some things were set up that those anglers who were around from the beginning will recognize as being different now.  Here are some things that have changed, from interesting modifications to corrected bugs.  These are just things that cross my mind, and I will add to it as I think of more or as people remind me of things.

Originally...
...all barter fish were assigned a value of 58 copper.  They could not, however be sold to vendors.  This was later corrected and the "worth" was removed from the image.
...there were no sound effects associated with fishing.  The sound effects for casting (slight whip crack) and reeling in (rubber band stretching) were added later.
...there was a bug associated with the 50-pound salmon, and it was not bind-on-acquire.  Because The Salmon King deed and The Compleat Angler title are associated with possession of the salmon and not the act of catching the fish, this meant that anyone being traded or mailed the fish would be instantly awarded the deed completion and title.  This was later corrected.
