Cornetist Ansgar “Dr. D” Duemchen is the Founder of “Dr. D and the Dixie Dogs.” After earning a trumpet performance degree with Leonard Cecil, Mark Sykes and Edward Tarr (Music Academy of Basel, Switzerland) and Gerald Webster (Washington State University), Ansgar performed as a freelance musician in Germany, playing with the Suedwestdeutsches Radio Symphonieorchester (Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra), Kammerorchester Rastatt Kammer Orchester Baden-Baden and Freiburg, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Neuenbuerg Big Band, Black Forest Dixie Dogs, Sugar Foot Stompers and Hardt Stompers. Ansgar also taught trumpet and band at the Gernsbach and Neuenbuerg Music Schools and was band leader for the Ettlingen Big Band. Ansgar holds a Masters degree in Education and a Certificate in Music Education from Western Washington University and has taught Band and Orchestra at Leota Junior High School. Ansgar currently teaches band at Monroe Middle School and is a freelance trumpet player throughout the Seattle Area. He is founding member of the “Seattle Trumpet Consort” a Natural Trumpet Ensemble and is E-flat cornet player in the Puget Brass, a Northwest Brassband. He has also adjudicated for Solo&Ensemble Festivals in Germany and Festivals in the Lake Washington School District and the Canby School District in Portland, Oregon. |
DAVE STANGLAND Soprano and Tenor Saxophones |
Saxophonist Dave Stangland has been performing in the Pacific Northwest as a woodwind artist in venues that include big bands, symphony orchestras, chamber music, jazz combos and concert bands. Daves musical training began in the public schools in Missoula, Montana. He performed and studied music at the University of Montana, and holds degrees from North Texas State University and Portland State University. In addition to “Dr. D and the Dixie Dogs,” Dave has performed with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Composer’s and Improvisers’ Orchestra, Portland Wind Ensemble, Everett Symphony, Thalia Symphony, Skagit Valley Chorale, Jazz Police, Mukilteo Jazz Orchestra and Jump-Up. Dave Stangland has taught music in public schools for over twenty years, and frequently works as a clinician at music festivals. Bands under his direction have consistently earned “Superior” ratings. Dave received an “Outstanding Educator – Golden Apple”{ award in 2005 from the Everett Public Schools. |
KEITH WINKLE Trombones |
Keith Winkle is an active performer and teacher in the Seattle area. He teaches Trombone at Pacific Lutheran University and Western Washington University and is a member of the Tacoma and Bellevue Symphony Orchestras, three brass quintets, and the Magnolia Jazz Band. Keith has appeared as a guest with the Jazz Police, the Jim Cutler Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera and the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra. |
KEVIN PIH Tuba |
Kevin Pih is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Tuba Performance and a Master of Arts degree in Music History at the University of Washington. He holds a Master of Arts in Tuba Performance and Bachelor degrees in both Music and Chemistry from San Jose State University. Kevin is the Principal Tubist of the Everett Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Federal Way Symphony Orchestra and Brassband Northwest. Kevin was the Principal Tubist in the Northwest Mahler Festival in the 2004 and 2005 Seasons. He was featured as a guest soloist with the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra in 2003. In addition, Kevin has appeared with numerous orchestral and chamber groups in California and the Pacific Northwest, including the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Creative Orchestra, Sammamish Symphony Orchestra, Turtle Bluff Orchestra, and Lake Union Civic Orchestra. Kevin works as a freelance musician in the greater Seattle area. He is a founding member of the Dixieland Band “Dr. D and the Dixie Dogs” and the Mosaic Brass Quintet, a highly acclaimed professional brass quintet. In addition to performing, Kevin maintains a private teaching studio with over 35 students. Kevin has studied with Robert Szabo (retired Professor of Low Brass at San Jose State University, Tony Clements (San Jose Symphony), Floyd Cooley (San Francisco Symphony), Edgar Phillips (Univeristy of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University), Keating Johnson (formerly of Washington State University) and Chris Olka (Seattle Symphony). |
TADD MORRIS Drums |
Tadd Morris is a native of the Seattle area. Tadd started playing the drums in his school band at the age of eleven and continued throughout High School and College, earning a degree in Music Education at Gonzaga University. He has studied under Jerry Garcia (long-time student of Freddy Gruber), John Bishop (of Seattle –based Origin Records), Paul Raymond (principal percussionist, Spokane Symphony), Rick Westrick (Spokane Symphony) and Daniel Cox (percussion instructor, Gonzaga University). Tadd has played with a wide variety of bands, including his own Tadd Morris Heptet, ska-punk band “10 minutes Down,” Swing Revival “United Soul Front,” Old school Jazzers “Dr. D and the Dixie Dogs” and many others. Tadd has had the opportunity to play on the Vans Warped Tour, as well as travel to Thailand and Japan. Tadd Morris is currently Band Director at the Snohomish Freshman Campus. |
BEVERLY SETZER Clarinet |
Bev Setzer has been playing the clarinet for 30 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance from the University of Washington. Bev enjoys playing a wide variety of music and plays quite a bit of musical theater. She is a member of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Village Band, Happy Feet (swing) and she has a blast in the Dixie Dogs! |
HENRY LAMKIN Guitar |
Henry Lamkin graduated from Florida State University where he studied classical guitar. Henry has been playing classical guitar in the greater Seattle area for 12 years and has been playing with the tempos for eight years. He maintains a private Guitar studio at Kennelly Keys Music in Woodinville. |
TIM WETMILLER Violin |
When not playing traditional jazz with Dr. D and the Dixie Dogs, Tim Wetmiller studies the music of the Tierra Caliente region in southwestern Mexico with the great violinist Juan Reynoso. He also enjoys playing music from other parts of Mexico and Latin America and bluegrass music. Some of the groups he plays with include Hot Club Sandwich, Los Flacos, the Rez Quartet, and Disfunction Junction. |
