Cliff Bank

This is the best place to meet people walking their dogs and get our puppy fixes.

We can walk out of Springfield House, cross to the fire station, cross the River Holme, and start up (and I do mean up) Bridge, Back, and Cliff Lane to the top of Cliff Bank. And up to the top of Cliff Bank, looking down at Holmfirth and Upperthong.

Or we can walk to Victoria Square, then go up the stairs by Sid's Cafe or up South Lane and work our way up to the other end of Cliff Bank. This is Chuck working his way up New Laithes Lane. On the down side of the lane, we're at the roof and treetop of the lane below!

Up on Cliff Bank, the view across Holmfirth, with Upperthong on the right road and Hinchliffe Mill on the left one.

Our special treat of this trip was up on Cliff Bank. In the North Yorkshire Dales, we get to see all the new lambs. Sometimes even play with bottle lambs. There were fewer in West Yorkshire. But, on May 2, a woman with her dog pointed out our compensation!

A foal that was not in the field with the mares the evening before. Brand new! Well, looked like a she to us for the rest of our stay. She was the colors of that penny candy with a powdery caramel around a white nougat, a sort of bull's eye.

But that's not all. We looked into the field the next morning.

A second brand new foal! And this one sure looked like a male. He was more the color of those caramels that are dark and shiny and wrapped in cellophane.

We had a ball watching them grow and gallop. The field is right at the top of Cliff Bank. And we could even take the walled footpath across the fields and see them from the other side as we walked across the Bank. And, on the far side of the foals' field, there were more horses.

These are not "fancy" horses. They are the Yorkshire hill horses that thrive here. I think they are what King Arthur and his men rode.

Again, these walks are anywhere from 2 to 3 miles, depending on side lanes and all. Another good choice for before breakfast - the best time to find dogs - or after dinner. You can even cut it shorter, if you're starving for baked beans and fried bread, by cutting across one of the lanes below the cliff.
