OrangeREADS 2012

and this

Web site are presented by the

Orange Library Association (OLA), serving the 17 public libraries in Orange County,

New York.

Orange Library Association is pleased to announce its selection of Forever by Pete Hamill for OrangeREADS 2012 and delighted that Pete Hamill has graciously agreed to speak at one of our OrangeREADS events on October 20.

Forever tells the story of Cormac O’Connor and the history of New York City. Cormac, an Irish immigrant who arrives in Manhattan in 1741 in search of the Earl of Warren and, eventually, his descendants, who Cormac holds responsible for the death of his family in Ireland, is given a mystical gift – immortality as long as he never leaves Manhattan.  Through Cormac’s eyes, we witness New York’s infancy through the catastrophe of September 11. We also follow Cormac as he lives through all of New York’s triumphs and tragedies while, at the same time, he attempts to fulfill his own destiny despite the loss of all those he cares about by the onslaught of time.

Author Pete Hamill has brought all of his love and knowledge of New York City to bear in this magical, historical and entertaining tale. Forever, like Hamill’s previous novel Snow in August, reveals Hamill to be a spellbinding and mythic storyteller.

- Joan Carvajal,  OrangeREADS 2012 Committee co-chair and director, Greenwood Lake Public Library

Critical Praise for Forever

“Hamill’s long history as a New York journalist, his knowledgeable love for the city and his writerly exuberance explode here into a New York fantasy: big, extravagant, untrammeled and as hugely readable as it must have been hugely entertaining to write."”

- Washington Post Book World

“Veteran journalist-cum-novelist Pete Hamill composes a fantastical ode to the city that never sleeps.”

- Entertainment Weekly

“... This book is like New York - bursting with life and adventure and the promise of a better future.”
