1. Economic Theory

The Law of Supply and Demand is real enough but the theory of the Free Market only works in a really free market. The US is not a free market in those areas which require large investment. There are numerous franchises which are monopolies. There are prejudices and laws which support the rich and certain institutions that favor the rich, like the military and big corporations. The list of laws which give advantage to the rich includes sales tax, social security tax, electric rates and the loss of labor rights. Numerous laws also protect or subsidize industries like sugar and big farming. The rich have powerful foundations and other institutions to promote their agenda. They maintain that they deserve enormous wages which is nonsense. They promote "supply side economics" which economists admit is false.

The difference between slavery and equality is the difference between an unfair and a fair price. A fair price is not "what the market will bear." It is based on an equal distribution of reward and sacrifice.

Consider the story of the Hunt Brothers and the silver market. It goes something like this: (See the whole story in Grider's "Secrets of the Temple.") The Hunt folk went to a bank and asked to borrow $300 million. The bank said fine and off they went with a cool $300 million. They went on to a second bank and asked for $400 million. They got it. They used this money to try to corner the silver market. The price of silver went up and up. The scheme wasn't working too well so they went to a third bank and asked for $600 million. They took that and bought even more silver. Unfortunately the market was too big to corner and when they stopped buying the market dropped drastically. That means all the money they put into silver evaporated. They went bankrupt. Then they went back to the banks and said "Hey buddy, remember all that money we borrowed? Well we can't pay you back." The banks were in serious trouble. They were about to go under. So they called the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Greenspan, and he called a little meeting of the banks. After the meeting he announced everything was going to be fine. The taxpayers would pay for it all.
Do you think they would do as much for you? Well this is proof of a ruling establishment.

2. Serious World Problems

a. Overpopulation

Numerous famous scientists and others have warned us that the planetary carrying capacity is about to be exceeded. The world population is going to be cut down one way or another. By 2075 it will be down to only 2 billion. We can only decide if it will be by planning or disaster. The population rise is an exponential function which will exceed all resources with mathematical certainty unless it is halted. We are cheating ourselves of our future, unless we end the population explosion.
Approach:
Ultimately if necessary the Chinese method could be adopted. That means strict laws mandating one child only. However long before considering such drastic measures it would behoove the politicians to speak out and demonstrate a little leadership. They could call for less motherhood and Federally fund abortions.

b. Environment

The destruction of the environment is proceeding faster than ever. We will soon live in a very bleak world unless something is done to halt unneeded development and wilderness loss.
Approach:
I support the environmental programs of the Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, Greens, Friends of the Earth and others. We all know what to do. It is only certain Right Wing organizations that stand in the way of progress.

c. Inequality

This means economic justice too. The legal privilege of the rich and corporations is not equality. The United States is breaking up into two classes-the rich and the poor.
Approach:
For information on the latest scams see Citizens for Tax Justice. Here is where real politics is needed. We need to help elect liberal candidates.
My paper US Foreign Policy Abuse, is fast becoming old history.

d. Corruption

Dishonesty is rampant in business and government. This includes the media hypocrisy. They make like they report news, but hide most of it. The media bias is exposed by
FAIR -- Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting
Approach:
A dual effort is needed here. First bypass the failed media using the Internet and organizations like Media Watch and Vote Smart. This is an easy networking effort. Second once again the vote counts.

e. Military Spending

The US could get by with a tenth of its present spending. The extra B2s and Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines are among the biggest wastes.
Approach:
As before, elect liberal candidates.

3. Politically Correct History

The United States is still suffering from cold war hysteria. There are still folk who say the Soviets were responsible for the hostilities. It turns out that each major escalation in weapons was led by the US. ICBMs, FBM submarines, MIRV, ABM, Star Wars all were US inventions, and US escalations. The US has consistently used military force to support foreign business exploits and dictators. In countries where popular revolts occurred against these dictators it has been customary to call the popular forces communists.

Left Wing - liberal opinion and politics is the most compact and extensive liberal organization index I have found. See also: New World Media, or Z Magazine, and Left On Line.

Or read my Untold History of the United States.

4. The Foundations

Enormously powerful institutions abound in the Washington and New York area which are funded by corporations and which serve as propaganda mills for the right wing. Ronald Reagan had the nerve to make most of his appointments from these right wing think tanks, and some appointees habitually lied. Some prejudiced outfits: Cato Institute, Heritage Foundation, Hudson Foundation, Brookings Institute.
William A. Dembski, another rising ID star, is a mathematician and senior fellow at the Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture, an anti-evolution project of the Seattle-based Discovery Institute.

5. Book reviews

I have reviewed a number of Economic books. Take your pick of  Secrets of the Temple, America Who Stole the Dream, Crimes of a President in my reviews.

6. Dialog

I have argued with free market and Libertarian nuts until I was blue in the face and they did not hear a single word. They defy logic and reason so bad, I wonder if they read any history. Federal regulations do more than save lives, they make commerce possible. The degree of cheating in the free market is unbelievable.
