Hughes enlisted to go to Canada 6/20/1653 and arrived in Montreal aboard the Saint Nicolas 11/16/1653, a member of the Grande Revue. Before leaving for Canada, he acknowledged receiving137 livres in advanced wages. At the end of his contract, Hughes went back to France, but came back to Canada in 1659 as a woodworker for Sulpicians of Montreal.
On June 11 1660, Notary Bassett drew up a marriage contract between Hughes and Anne-Antoinette de Liercourt. Neither could sign the contract but Governor Maisonneuve of Montreal did. On June 13, 1660 Hugues was named guardian of Anne's and Blaise's children and Lambert Closse ( a witness in the marraige contract) was named the children's trustee. Hughes was confirmed by Bishop Laval on 8/24/1660.
Hughes became a soldier in the 12th squadron of the island's Sainte-Famille militia in 1663.
