Hitting the big five-o was the one birthday I wanted to celebrate since it seemed like an important milestone. I remember going to a fiftieth birthday celebration some years ago. It was a 1950s theme party given to a postal employee by her friends and workmates that included dancing to the oldies and some good old-fashioned diner food. I felt that the individual was very lucky to have thougtful friends that would put together a party to commemorate her big five-o. The co-workers at my place of employment surprised me by not observing my fiftieth birthday as they had other employees in the department (and in whose luncheons I had participated). It seems unfortunate that they chose to overlook mine, since the mid century mark occurs only once in a lifetime. My wife Karen more than made up for it though, planning a surprise for me on a special weekend trip to Laughlin, Nevada. She purchased a large, fancy cake in the shape of a 1950s jukebox and served a piece to everyone on the chartered bus on the way to Laughlin. In this way, many of the group joined in wishing me a happy 50th birthday. The rest of the huge cake from the Torrance Bakery found itself up to our hotel room where we had spiced pineapple cake with breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next two days. |
