Sisu Designs

Sisu Designs is on the west edge of the downtown business district in Ely, Minnesota.  Ely is way up on the northern border of Minnesota, in the area known as the Arrowhead.  We also live "on the Range" - at the eastern extremity of the Vermilion Iron Range - referring to the northern most area where there has been extensive iron mining.  We're a hundred miles north of Duluth, and 250 miles north of the the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul), and only about ten miles from the Canadian border.  We are also on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), and many tourists find their way into my shop when they come to Ely for canoeing, fishing, camping, or skiing.  Sometimes the women come in while the guys are out on the lakes - or next door to the shop at Joe's Marine and Repair getting their outboard motor, chain saw, weed whacker or snow blower fixed.  The Ely area also has a large summer population of snowbirds - folks who migrate north in the spring, just as the birds do, to spend the warm months in their cabins on the shores of our beautiful lakes.  They head south again to warmer territory before winter settles in with its snow and cold arctic air.  We still get many hardy tourists in the winter.  They come for cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, dog sledding and winter camping.  But things are considerably quieter and less crowded during the winter than during the warm summer months.
