He served as an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Hawaii.

After his service, he travelled to Las Vegas where he learned to repair slot machines. He moved back to Illinois and worked as a welder for the coal mines in Perry County, IL. Later, he was an instructor at John A. Logan College.

Jim married Lillian Marie BEASLEY on 8 Oct 1955 in Clay County, IL. She was born on 20 Nov 1929 in Chicago, IL. She died on 6 Aug 2014 in Du Quoin, IL. She is buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Du Quoin, IL.
