Comments: These 25 cars were the second series of
open cars built by City and Suburban. Unlike their predecessors they
were vestibuled.
They were apparently kept at the Ankeny Carbarn in the early days (where
the above photo was taken) and saw use on the Sunnyside Line.
Retirement: 1926 = 218, 220, 223, 230, 236-37, 239-40
& 233; 1927 = 225, 232, 234-35; 1930 = 219; 1933
= 216-17, 221-22, 224, 228-29, 231 & 238.
Technical Notes: All received Nelson fenders in
1912.
No. 232 had 2 Brill Eureka 22 trucks instead of Peckhams.
No.'s 225, 227, 233, 234 & 235 had (one each) K-10 and K-11 controllers.
No. 234 may have had K-11 controllers from the start.
By 1924 the entire series had K-11 controllers.
A reference to these cars being stored at the Center Street Shops after
1919 would suggest that most were already out of service by then, though
not officially retired. These would soon be stripped of their motors.
No. 235 had no motors as early as 1917.
No.'s 218, 225-27, 232-35, & 240 had no motors in 1922.
No.'s 218 & 240 were without motors in a 1923 field check.
On the other hand, the ten cars retired after 1930 were apparently upgraded
to 2 GE-800 motors instead of 58's. |
