Comments: These were the first group of narrow gauge
pay-as-you-enter (PAYE) type cars that PRL&P bought new. instead
of merely remodeling older cars. They featured squarish-looking "bay
window" ends that were not used on later PAYE designs. They were
bought together with standard gauge twins No.'s 1016-20.
This class was used on lines including Depot-Morrison (Willamette Heights),
Montavilla, St. Johns and Vancouver.
Retirement: All in 1948 except for No. 471, which went in 1947.
Technical Notes:
Received Nelson Safety Fenders in 1912.
Between 1923-25 all received two additional GE-58 motors and were moved
up to class L.
In 1927, during conversion for one-man operation, No.'s 481-84 were
remodeled with cross bench seating and removal of bulkheads. They
were first used on the Vancouver Line.
During 1929-30 the safety fenders on cars 466 & 468 (1930) and 469
(1929) were replaced with Portland Railway fenders.
No. 466 had 2 GE-28B controllers instead of F types like the others. |
