The GALYEANS are one of Indianas earliest settlers and have been part of Indianas History for over 150 years. This is a summary of our Galyean Ancestors, who they were and what they represent in Indiana History. Links are provided to biographies, photographs, and letters of several Galyeans.
The First Indiana Galyean
Thomas Galyean is the original Galyean settler in Indiana. Thomas
Gallion resided in Surry County, North Carolina and Grainger County, Tennessee prior
to moving to Wayne County Indiana. The spelling of his name changed after
his move to Indiana. He sold the North Carolina property he acquired from
his father-in-law, John Williams in 1802. He next purchased property in
what is now Wayne County, Indiana on November 1, 1811. This is located
west of present day Greens Fork,IN. His son, Jacob, purchased adjoining
land at the same time. At that time he declared his residence as Preble
County, Ohio. Since Indiana was not a State in 1811, all land purchases
were made through the Cincinnati, Ohio Land Office and his land was only a few
miles from Ohio. It is not clear whether he actually made a physical move
from Ohio or just settled and then purchased the land. Thomas was one of
the early settlers of Wayne County, Indiana. His descendants spread into
Henry, LaPorte, Kosciusko and Wells Counties in Indiana.
Thomas is the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Arnold Gallion. He was born March 17, 1758 at St. Georges Parish, Maryland. He married Margaret Williams about 1780 in Surry Co. North Carolina. Records show that Thomas served over four years in the Revolutionary War. Other records have two Thomas Gallions from Maryland serving in the Revolutionary War. It is not known which ended up in Indiana. He was a farmer until his death in 1828. Upon his death, his wife resided with a son, Thomas Jr. She disappeared after the 1830 census. Thomas and Margaret's graves have never been located.
