Sound

There's nothing quite like the sound of a number of EM pinball games in action at the same time. There's the constant clatter of the flippers, pop bumpers and slingshots along with the relays and stepper units working inside the cabinet. But to a player there's music in the bells and chimes as the scoring goes up, up, up!

There are two types of sound making devices and all games have one or the other. The older EM games used semicircular bells of different sizes. A solenoid would cause a "hammer" to hit the bell. There were usually three bell sizes and scored the 1's, 10's and hundreds in the early games (10's,100's, and 1000's in later games).

In this picture you can see the "hammer" to the left of the bell. There's a second bell partly hidden in the bottom part of the picture.

The later EM games used chimes which produced a much more pleasant sound. Chimes consisted of three different lengths of aluminum bars. A solenoid core would strike the bar and the sound was amplified by the resonant chambers below each one. Notice the small opening into the black chambers at the top left edge of the black plastic. Also notice where the bars are supported.

But a pinball players favorite sound always came from.............

the KNOCKERS!!!
