Arkansas - Mount Magazine (Signal Hill) - 2,753 Feet - June 21, 2008
Friday, June 20, 2008 - It was off to Arkansas. We went north to Little Rock and then west to the Ozarks. We stayed at Cove
Lake CG, just north of Mt. Magazine.
Saturday, June 21, 2008 - We drove to Mt. Magazine SP. The rangers showed us the rock climbing guide and even copied a couple
of pages for us. It was a short hike to the highpoint. Then we went rock climbing in front of the lodge. It took a while to
find the route, Junior Achievement. It was a 75' 5.6. We top roped this. The rope became crossed and would let me climb but
not take slack. I was practically forced to make it to the top. The climb wasn't that difficult but a fall could have led to a
big swing into a wall. The butterfly festival was this weekend. There were presentations at the lodge. The Diana butterfly was
recently made Arkansas' state butterfly. It is found in the Appalachians (including sourthern WV) and Arkansas. There are great
views throughout Mt. Magazine SP.
