Attempt on King's Peak, Utah

Friday, June 23, 2006 - We had more tire trouble. One had a slow leak. We found a place in Fort Collins to fix it. We then drove up I25 to I80 and across Wyoming to Carter (near Fort Bridger). We drove south on SR414 to the BLM office in Mountain View. They had just closed but we found a ranger in back who told us that the trail to King's Peak was in good shape. At the south end of Mountain View we took SR410 toward Robertson for 7 miles, turned left (south) on CR283 for 12 files, left (south) on FR17 for 7 miles, and right (south) on FR77 for 3 miles to Henry's Fork Campground. We arrived in time to gather some firewood before dark. The mosquitos weren't too bad.

Saturday, June 24, 2006 - We hiked to Dollar Lake. We saw a moose in the distance after crossing Henry's Fork. The mosquitos started getting bad while crossing the open meadow before Dollar Lake. We scouted out campsites and chose one in the meadow near Dollar Lake on the left side of the trail. No campfires are allowed within 1000 feet of Dollar Lake. We saw another moose in the evening. It was a young one. The mosquitos were getting ferocious.

Sunday, June 25, 2006 - We hiked up to about 10,500 feet. The mosquitos were still very bad. It was only another 500 feet of elevation gain to the top of Gunsight Pass. But once there, we would have to drop down 500 feet to our next campsite. Our plan had been to camp at Painter Basin, hike to the top and back with daypacks, spend another night, and hike out, with the option of spending an extra night if the peak was inaccessible one day due to weather. Figuring that the mosquitos would be just as bad at the next campsite and knowing that we might be there for three nights, we decided to turn around. So, we hiked all the way out and drove to the Little America Motel on I80 near Green River. The food was very good at Little America.
