Kansas - Mt. Sunflower - 4,039 Feet - June 24, 2005

Friday, June 24, 2005 - We drove north through Leadville and past the Climax molybdenum mine to I-70. We then drove east, past Denver, to the Kanorado exit in Kansas. We drove south 13.5 miles, east .4 mile, and south 8.1 miles to an access road on the right. We chased off a couple of pronghorn antelope on the way in. You might not think a highpoint in the middle of miles and miles of flatland would be interesting, but this one was. There is a nice sunflower sculpture made from railroad spikes, a picnic shelter, and a mailbox with a register.

We continued east on I-70 through heavy thunderstorms to Abilene, KS and stopped at an Econolodge. President Eisenhower was born in Abilene.
