North Dakota - White Butte - 3,508 Feet - August 1, 2013

Monday, July 29, 2013 - I drove up Ohio 7 and 11 to I80. I80 turned into I80/90 west of Cleveland, OH, which turned into I90/I94 near Chicago, IL. I took I90 out of Chicago, IL to I90/39 at Rockford, IL, I90/39 to I90/94 at Madison, WI, I90/94 to I94 at Portage, WI, and I94 to Mirror Lake State Park at exit 89. OH, IN, and IL were one long construction zone with toll booths. Tolls totaled about $30. Getting through Chicago wasn't too bad. Mirror Lake State Park was nice. Wisconsin charges to camp plus a charge for each car in the park.

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 - I drove through the rest of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and half of North Dakota to Bismark. I took ND83 north to Lake Sakakawea and camped at the Corps of Engineers' Downstream Campground. It was next to the Missouri River just below Garrison Dam and was very nice. Garrison Dam forms Lake Sakakawea.

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - I went to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and the reconstructed Fort Mandan. The original Fort Mandan burned. It was gone when Lewis and Clark returned from Oregon. The reconstructed Fort Mandan is believed to be about 10 miles from the original site. The original site would be under water due to the Missouri River changing its course. The Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan are run by a private foundation. I also toured the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. There are only mounds of earth left where the original earth lodges were. Sakakawea, a Shoshone, lived at one of the villages, the Hidatsa village, with her French-Canadian trader husband, Toussaint Charbonneau.

Thursday, August 1, 2013 - I drove down to Bismark, then west on I94 to US85, and down to Amidon and White Butte. I left $10 in the mailbox and walked up to the ND highpoint. The report on summitpost.org had me leery of rattlesnakes, but none were to be seen.

I continued on down US85 to US12 west to I94 and then I90 to the Columbus exit (no. 408). I took MT78 south and MT419 west to Fishtail, MT. A mile out of Fishtail, I turned left on West Rosebud Road, drove 6 miles to West Rosebud Lake Road #72, and drove another 14 miles to Emerald Lake Campground.
