Nebraska - Panorama Point - 5,424 Feet - June 11, 2005
Friday, June 10, 2005 - We drove to Indianapolis, IN on I-70, Davenport, IA on I-74, and Des Moines, IA on I-80 where
we stopped at a Super 8.
Saturday, June 11, 2005 - We crossed the rest of Iowa and all of Nebraska, exiting I-80 at Pine Bluffs, WY. The drive across
Nebraska was more scenic than I expected, especially while follwing the Platte River. At Pine Bluffs, we drove east on the
street just south of the Conoco
station to Beech St., turned right on Beech St. (Road 164), passed under I-80, drove about 9 miles to road 203, turned left (east)
on 203 which turns into road 6 when it enters Nebraska, drove about 3.5 miles to road 5, turned right (south) on road 5, drove 2
miles to a dirt road on the right, turned right, and drove about a mile to the highpoint.
There is a sign at the turnoff for the highpoint, a sign for the High Point Bison Ranch, and a canister for a donation. We
could see a herd of bison in the distance. There was rain in the distance. This was the first time we hillfolk saw
rain falling from a distance. We returned to I-80 and drove a few miles west to the Wyo Campground where we saw our first
tumbleweeds and boy, were we excited then.
