Missy and Angie on Nantahala River

Friday, June 28, 2002 - We kayaked the Nanatahala (class II). A lot of people had told me how cold the Nantahala is but it was still a surprise. There was a fog over the river. We went to the NOC and bought t-shirts and a PFD for Missy.

Angie and Tour Train at Nantahala River
Saturday, June 29, 2002 - Angie turned 12. We drove east on 74 to 19 east to 441 north into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We turned left off of 441 onto the road to Clingman's Dome. Clouds came and went on Clingman's Dome. We then drove north on 441 through Pigeon Forge, TN. There was major traffic for Dollywood and a car show. I'll try not to drive through there again in the summer. 441 becomes 66 at Sevierville, TN. We took 66 to I-40 / I-81 north to I-181 north to 23 north to bus. 23 north to Appalachia, VA. From Appalachia, we took 160 west to the VA-KY border. At the border sign, we turned left and drove past the FAA site to a Y in the road. We turned left at the Y and parked. Don't take the first left onto a dirt road. The Kentucky highpoint was a short walk past a gate. There is an abandoned tower with the USGS marker at its base. We ate at the Pizza Hut in Appalachia. From here we returned home. It was a long day, over 600 miles.
