Vermont - Mount Mansfield - 4,393 Feet - June 27, 2007

Wednesday, June 27, 2007 - We were at the gate for the Stowe Mountain Resort Auto Road at 9 am. Its $21 to drive to within a mile and a half of the summit. In the winter, the road is a ski trail. There was a good view all around.

From here we drove to the Nereledge Inn in North Conway, New Hampshire. We had stayed here in December 2003 when we made our winter attempt on Mt. Washington. We went to Pizza Hut and then drove to the top of Cathedral Ledges. A climber was just topping out. He was a little bloody. He said it was five pitches.

Thursday, June 28, 2007 - We climbed at Whitehorse Ledges in the morning. It is slab climbing that is not too difficult but the pitches are very long. We climbed two pitches of the beginner's route on the right side. We made it to the first belay using less than half of a rope, but the second pitch was a little more than half of a rope length. We rapped down on the far right where there were some additional trees. Two ropes are really needed to climb here.

In the afternoon, we drove west on 302, hiked to Arethusa Falls, and drove to the Mt. Washington Hotel. The Mt. Washington Hotel was the site of the 1944 Bretton Woods Monetary Conference which established the gold standard and the World Bank International Monetary Fund.
