Accroding to "Landmarks of Steuben County, NY" by Honorable Harlo Hakes (publis hed 1896), found in the Elmira and Bath (NY) public libraries, page 44-47, are several refere nces to William Buchanan being the first settler of Avoca, along with his son Michael. Willia m is buried on the farm of Hubbard Stanton; his date of death is 13 July 1817, aged 78 years.
