Don Norman says "Catherine's father, Nicholas, owned land at Redstone, near Brownsville, Penn sylvania."

In the month of September, Nicholas Carpenter set off to Marietta with a drove of cattle to s ell to those who had established themselves there; and when within some miles from the Ohio r iver, encamped for the night. In the morning early, and while he and the drovers were yet dre ssing, they were alarmed by a discharge of guns, which killed one and wounded another of hi s party. The others endeavored to save themselves by flight, but Carpenter being a cripple ( because of a wound received some years before) did not run far, when finding himself becomin g faint, he entered a pond of water where he fondly hoped he should escape observation. Bu t no! both he and a son who had likewise sought security there, were discovered, tomahawked a nd scalped. George Legett, one of the drovers, was never after heard of; but Jesse Hughes suc ceeded in getting off though under disadvantageous circumstances. He wore long leggings, an d when the firing commenced at the damp, they were fastened at top to his belt, but hanging l oose below. Although an active runner, yet he found that the pursuers were gaining and must u ltimately overtake him if he did not rid himself of this encumbrance. For this purpose he hal ted somewhat and stepping on the lower part of his leggings, broke the strings which tied the m to his belt; but before he accomplished this, one of the savages approached and hurled a to mahawk at him. It merely grazed his head, and he then again took to flight and soon got off. " Border Warfare Chapter 17

(Source: Carpenter Memorial, p 129.); died October 04, 1791. He married
Mary Wolfe. Notes for Nicholas 676 Carpenter:
A merchant. He moved to Maryland thence to Virginia and lastly to Ohio. He was murdered by t he Indians Oct 4, 1791 while taking a drove of cattle to Meereto or some place in Ohio. He w as Judge of the court for Harrison county for 15 years. He had on his farm a gun and blacksmi th's shop, store and schoolhouse, al of which were his own property. He owned 2,000 acres o f land, had an orchard of 400 bearing apple trees at the time of his death. He carried the pr oduce on mules over the mountains at that early day. His death was very much lamented by th e people. Had he not net with an early death he would been one of the great and rich men o f this country. He died at the early age of 48 years. Taken from H.P. Hildreth's History of t he Early Days. The above account of the family was given to the writer by David Carpenter gra ndson of Nicholas, when he was 80 years of age. The tradition by him was that three brother s came from Germany. Their names were Christopher, Emanuel and David. David went South and w as never heard from. Emanuel settled in Pennsylvania and his heirs are there yet.

Papers of the Con tinental Congress No 48, Folios 251-6, pages 89-96). The names in this petition, which is no t dated, seem at times to be taken from the militia rolls, and if circulated after 1780 conta ins names of persons deceased or moved from the district. There is no attempt to conceal th e fact that the signatures were written by the prime agitators of the movement as many of tho se names which appear here could only make their mark.
